ENUGU Air has commenced its maiden international flight service from Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, to Douala, Cameroon, marking a major expansion of the airline’s operations beyond Nigeria’s domestic aviation network.
The inaugural Enugu–Douala flight was flagged off by Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, as part of efforts to strengthen regional connectivity and position Enugu as an emerging aviation and economic hub in the South-East.
The new international route provides a direct air connection between Enugu and Douala, one of Central Africa’s major commercial centres, with the service expected to facilitate easier movement for passengers while supporting trade, investment, tourism and other forms of cross-border economic activity.
The commencement of the route also represents a significant milestone for Enugu Air, coming about 14 months after the state-owned airline began operations. The airline has subsequently expanded its network and is now extending its services to destinations outside Nigeria.
Governor Mbah has linked the development to his administration’s broader economic transformation agenda, which places emphasis on improving infrastructure, connectivity and the business environment to attract investment and expand economic opportunities.
The Enugu–Douala service is expected to strengthen the relationship between Enugu and Cameroon while providing residents of the South-East and neighbouring areas with another direct option for international travel.
The development further underscores the administration’s efforts to leverage aviation infrastructure and connectivity as strategic components of Enugu State’s long-term economic development plans.
