ENUGU State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has charged the newly sworn-in chairmen of the state’s 17 Local Government Areas to immediately hit the ground running, stressing that there is no honeymoon as they assume responsibility for delivering development to their constituents.

Governor Mbah gave the charge on Wednesday at the Government House, Enugu, during the swearing-in of the newly elected council chairmen and their deputies.

The Governor described local government as the tier of government closest to the people and an active partner in the state’s development agenda, particularly in addressing poverty and improving living conditions in rural communities.

According to him, the promises made by the chairmen during the electioneering period have now become obligations to the people who entrusted them with their mandates.

He urged the council chiefs to align their programmes with the broader development priorities of the state government, particularly poverty reduction, education, healthcare, sanitation and agriculture.

Mbah also charged the chairmen to remain accessible to the people, operate transparently and ensure that public resources are responsibly utilised.

On education, the Governor called on the council authorities to identify children of school age who are out of school and work towards ensuring that every child in their respective LGAs has access to education.

He further urged them to adopt data-driven approaches in measuring progress, particularly in poverty reduction and other areas of human development.

The Governor said the fight against poverty must go beyond declarations, stressing the need for deliberate interventions and measurable outcomes, especially among poor and vulnerable residents in rural communities.

Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairmen, Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, Chairman of Igboeze South LGA and Deputy Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Enugu State, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve.

He pledged the commitment of the council chairmen to good governance and the development agenda of the state.

The 17 chairmen were sworn in following the September 26 Enugu State local government election. According to reports, 12 of the chairmen were re-elected, while five are serving as council chairmen for the first time.
