WATER SUPPLY: MBAH SAYS ENUGU PRODUCES 120 MILLION LITRES DAILY, TARGETS IMPROVED DISTRIBUTION.

Gov. Mbah Highlights Water Infrastructure as a Key Driver of Economic and Agricultural Development.

Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform — 23 October 2026.

ENUGU STATE Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has reiterated that the state has increased its daily water-production capacity from approximately two million litres to 120 million litres, while acknowledging the need to improve distribution to households and communities across Enugu metropolis.

The governor reportedly made the statement during the town hall meeting held at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, where he discussed water supply, agricultural development, security cooperation and the state’s economic prospects.

According to a report published by Advocate News Nigeria on 21 October, the governor attributed the increase to interventions involving the state’s water infrastructure, including the reactivation of the Ninth Mile water scheme. The report also highlighted continuing challenges associated with ageing pipelines, burst pipes and the extension of distribution networks to residential areas.

FROM WATER PRODUCTION TO HOUSEHOLD ACCESS

The reported production capacity represents a substantial increase over the approximately two million litres per day that the administration says were available before its intervention.

However, water production and reliable access to potable water are two different measures of service delivery. While treatment plants and pumping facilities may generate sufficient volumes, residents must also have functional transmission lines, distribution networks and household connections to benefit consistently.

In December 2024, the Enugu State Government announced a $100 million foreign direct investment agreement aimed at strengthening downstream water infrastructure. At the time, Governor Mbah acknowledged that extending the distribution network and connecting tertiary pipelines to individual homes remained significant challenges.

The ongoing priority, therefore, is to ensure that the reported production capacity translates into dependable water supply for residents, businesses, schools, healthcare facilities and other public institutions.

WATER SUPPLY AND AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

Reliable water infrastructure is also important to Enugu State’s agricultural ambitions. Access to water can support irrigation, livestock production, food processing and other agricultural activities, particularly when complemented by suitable infrastructure, efficient distribution and sustainable water management.

For farmers and agribusiness operators, dependable water access can help reduce production disruptions, improve productivity and support value-chain development. Businesses in food processing, hospitality, manufacturing and other water-dependent sectors can also benefit from a more reliable public water system.

As the state pursues its broader economic development objectives, the effective management of water resources will remain an important consideration in attracting investment, supporting enterprises and improving living standards.

ACCOUNTABILITY THROUGH MEASURABLE SERVICE DELIVERY

The reported 120-million-litre daily production figure provides an important basis for assessing progress in the water sector. Nevertheless, a comprehensive evaluation should also examine the actual volume delivered to consumers, the number of households connected, the frequency of supply, water quality, affordability and the geographical coverage of the distribution network.

Independent verification of production figures, alongside published distribution data and feedback from affected communities, would help residents understand the extent of progress and the challenges that remain.

For households that continue to experience irregular supply, the central question is when increased production capacity will result in consistent access to safe and affordable water at home.
