GOVERNOR OF ENUGU State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has reassured Christian leaders and religious institutions of his administration’s commitment to sustaining a strong partnership with the Church in advancing basic education across the state.
The Governor emphasised that the administration’s Smart Green Schools initiative is not designed to displace or undermine the historic contributions of religious institutions to education but to complement their efforts and expand access to quality learning opportunities for children across Enugu State.
Mbah’s assurance reinforces his administration’s recognition of the significant role played by churches in establishing and managing educational institutions, promoting moral values and shaping generations of students in the state.
Smart Green Schools: Expanding Access to Quality Education
The Governor explained that the Smart Green Schools programme represents a strategic investment in the future of Enugu children through modern educational infrastructure, technology-driven learning and improved teaching and learning environments.
The initiative, designed to establish 260 Smart Green Schools across the state’s 260 wards, is part of the administration’s broader education reform agenda.
According to the administration’s vision, the schools are expected to provide improved learning facilities, digital education opportunities and an environment that prepares children for the demands of a rapidly changing world.
Recognising the Church’s Historic Contributions
Mbah acknowledged the longstanding contributions of Christian organisations to the development of education in Enugu State, noting the importance of preserving the partnership between government and faith-based institutions.
He maintained that government investment in education should create opportunities for collaboration rather than competition, with both public and religious institutions working towards the shared objective of producing knowledgeable, responsible and morally grounded citizens.
The Governor’s position also highlights the importance of engaging church leaders and other education stakeholders in shaping policies that affect the future of basic education.
A Shared Responsibility for Educational Development
The assurance is expected to strengthen confidence among religious stakeholders and encourage continued collaboration in improving educational standards, expanding access to learning and promoting the overall development of children.
As Enugu State pursues its ambition of building a knowledge-driven economy, sustained cooperation between government, religious institutions, teachers, parents and communities remains essential.
The Smart Green Schools initiative and the Church’s established educational network represent complementary avenues through which more children can access quality education and prepare for future opportunities.
