PREPARATIONS ARE GATHERING momentum in Enugu State ahead of the 2026 National Sports Festival, tagged “Coal City Games Enugu 2026,” as the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah intensifies efforts to deliver a successful national sporting event.

The festival, scheduled to hold from November 27 to December 11, 2026, will bring together athletes, coaches, sports administrators and officials representing states and the Federal Capital Territory for a national celebration of sporting talent and competition.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, is among the major facilities being upgraded for the event, with ongoing rehabilitation and modernisation works aimed at improving its capacity to host major sporting competitions.

Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Receives Major Infrastructure Upgrade

The Enugu State Government is undertaking extensive improvements at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium to prepare the facility for the festival and strengthen its long-term sporting capacity.

According to an update from the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, construction activities include:

  • Rehabilitation of the main football pitch, which was reported to be nearing completion.
  • Construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool and its pavilion.
  • Installation of a new athletics track.
  • Commencement of stadium cladding works.
  • Installation of a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.
  • Upgrading of commentary boxes and VIP facilities.
  • Installation of modern LED scoreboards, which was scheduled to commence following the ministry’s update.

These improvements are intended to provide a modern sporting environment for athletes, officials, spectators and visitors attending the competition.

The broader stadium project also includes improvements to spectator facilities, changing rooms, floodlights and other supporting infrastructure.

Awgu Games Village: Preparing to Accommodate Athletes

Beyond the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, the Awgu Games Village is another major component of Enugu’s preparations.

The facility is undergoing rehabilitation and development to provide accommodation and sporting infrastructure for contingents arriving from different parts of the country.

During an earlier inspection, Governor Mbah highlighted ongoing work on a 1,000-capacity hostel, indoor and outdoor courts, a standard football pitch and an eight-lane athletics track.

The Governor expressed confidence that the facility would be ready before the commencement of the festival and would provide an appropriate environment for participating athletes and officials.

National Sports Commission Inspects Facilities Ahead of Festival

In preparation for the November competition, the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Enugu State’s Local Organising Committee scheduled a joint technical meeting and inspection of designated facilities from October 27 to 30, 2026.

The exercise brought together key stakeholders, including representatives of national sports federations, technical directors, state sports administrators and members of the Main Organising Committee.

The inspection was designed to assess facility readiness, review technical arrangements, identify outstanding requirements and strengthen coordination between the Federal Government’s sports authorities and the host state.

The exercise represents an important stage in ensuring that the venues and supporting arrangements meet the requirements of the various sporting events.

Coal City Games: Enugu’s Opportunity to Showcase Sporting Excellence

The 2026 National Sports Festival represents an important opportunity for Enugu State to showcase its sporting infrastructure, organisational capacity, hospitality and commitment to sports development.

At the unveiling of the official festival mascot, “Odum Eze, Lion King,” Governor Mbah, represented by Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, said the mascot symbolised strength, courage, leadership and discipline.

The Governor also emphasised the importance of integrity and high standards in the organisation of the competition.

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, expressed confidence in Enugu’s preparations following an earlier inspection of facilities, while acknowledging that some venues still required finishing touches.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, also reaffirmed the state’s ambition to host a memorable competition and strengthen Enugu’s position as a destination for major sporting events.

Beyond the Festival: Building a Sustainable Sports Economy

The investments in sports infrastructure are expected to extend beyond the festival itself.

Modern sporting facilities can support grassroots talent discovery, youth development, professional competitions, sports tourism and private-sector investment.

For young athletes in Enugu, the festival also presents an opportunity to witness national-level competition, engage with sporting professionals and draw inspiration from athletes representing different parts of Nigeria.

The long-term value of the infrastructure will depend on its effective maintenance, accessibility and continued use for sporting activities after the festival.

Ndi Enugu Prepare to Welcome Nigeria

As the November 27 opening date approaches, expectations are building across Enugu State as preparations continue at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Awgu Games Village and other designated facilities.

The Coal City Games will place Enugu before a national audience, providing an opportunity to showcase the state’s hospitality, sporting talent, culture and development ambitions.

With the joint technical inspection taking place from October 27 to 30, attention is now focused on completing outstanding works, coordinating logistics and ensuring that the facilities are ready to receive participating contingents.
