UPDATE: ENUGU’S ₦32 BILLION GRATUITY PACKAGE — RETIREES AWAIT FURTHER DISBURSEMENT.

Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform — October 31, 2026.

RETIRED PUBLIC SERVANTS in Enugu State are awaiting further updates on the implementation of the state government’s approved ₦32 billion gratuity package aimed at clearing outstanding retirement benefits accumulated over several years.

The payment initiative, announced by the state government in October 2026, is designed to address inherited gratuity liabilities owed to eligible retired workers, with records reportedly dating back to the year 2000.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed the approval following a State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Enugu, explaining that an initial ₦10 billion tranche had been scheduled for release to commence the payment process.

GOVERNMENT OUTLINES PHASED PAYMENT ARRANGEMENT

According to the SSG, the approximately ₦32 billion provision forms part of the administration’s plan to settle verified legacy gratuity obligations before the end of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s first tenure.

He explained that the funds had been captured in the state’s 2026 budget, which received approval from the Enugu State House of Assembly.

The initial ₦10 billion was announced as the first tranche, with subsequent releases expected to follow until the verified outstanding liabilities are cleared.

VERIFICATION EXERCISE TO GUIDE BENEFICIARY PAYMENTS

The government also disclosed that a verification committee had reviewed 66,783 records across workforce and pension-gratuity categories to establish legitimate claims and determine the actual financial obligations.

The exercise was intended to prevent fraudulent claims and ensure that payments reach qualified beneficiaries.

Retirees who have concerns regarding their verification outcomes were also encouraged to submit complaints to the appropriate verification committee for review.

PAYMENT STATUS: RETIREES SEEK FURTHER CLARIFICATION

As of October 31, 2026, the publicly available reports reviewed by EMV confirm the government’s approval of the ₦32 billion package and its announcement of the initial ₦10 billion tranche.

However, a subsequent official statement independently confirming the actual release of the initial funds, the number of retirees paid and the amount disbursed has not been established.

Consequently, the announcement of the payment package should be distinguished from confirmation of completed disbursements.

Retirees are therefore looking forward to further communication from the relevant government authorities regarding payment schedules, beneficiary lists and the commencement of individual payments.

ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY IN RETIREMENT BENEFITS

The settlement of outstanding gratuities remains an important welfare issue for former public servants who dedicated several years to the service of Enugu State.

Beyond the approval of funds, transparent implementation, timely communication and periodic disclosure of disbursement figures will be important in assessing progress towards clearing the accumulated obligations.

Enugu Media Village will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as further official information becomes available.
