The exercise brought together national sports administrators, members of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), the Local Organising Committee (LOC), representatives of National Sports Federations and Directors of Sports from different states to assess preparations and address technical requirements ahead of the national sporting event.
NSC AND ENUGU ORGANISERS REVIEW FACILITY READINESS
The National Sports Commission delegation was led by its Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, while the Enugu State delegation was led by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Lloyd Ikechukwu Ekweremadu.
The inspection focused on the condition and preparedness of designated competition venues, accommodation facilities and other operational arrangements required for hosting athletes and officials from across the country.
The accompanying technical meeting provided an opportunity for stakeholders to deliberate on sporting requirements, identify areas requiring attention and strengthen coordination between the national commission and the host state.
Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Other Facilities Receive Attention
Among the major facilities discussed was the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, where upgrade works are ongoing ahead of the competition.
The Awgu Games Village is also receiving attention, with planned facilities including a 1,000-capacity hostel, indoor and outdoor courts, a standard football pitch and an eight-lane athletics track.
Earlier, Governor Peter Mbah had inspected the Awgu facility and assured that the state government was committed to completing the necessary works before the arrival of participating contingents.
NSC CONFIRMS PROGRESS AFTER TECHNICAL INSPECTION
Speaking after the October 29 technical meeting and inspection, NSC Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, expressed confidence in the level of preparations in Enugu.
He disclosed that concerns raised during the inspection had been addressed through engagements with contractors handling the stadium upgrade and other designated facilities.
He also confirmed that the opening ceremony had been fixed for November 28, 2026, with participating contingents expected to begin arriving on November 26. This represents an adjustment to the initially announced November 27 opening date, while December 11 remains the scheduled closing date.
The festival is expected to attract approximately 12,000 athletes and officials from across the country.
ENUGU PREPARES TO WELCOME NIGERIA’S SPORTING CONTINGENTS
The Coal City Games will provide a national platform for athletes representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to compete across various sporting disciplines.
Beyond the sporting competitions, the event is expected to create opportunities for tourism, hospitality businesses, transportation operators, small businesses and other sectors of Enugu’s economy.
The successful hosting of the festival will require sustained collaboration among the National Sports Commission, the Enugu State Government, sports federations, security agencies and other stakeholders.
With the technical inspection completed, attention now turns to addressing outstanding observations and finalising preparations before the arrival of participating contingents.
