400km Regional Pipeline Targets Industrial Growth, Lower Energy Costs, Investment and Job Creation Across Five South-East States.

PRESIDENT BOLA Ahmed Tinubu has backed a proposed $100 million South-East Gas Distribution Pipeline Project designed to connect natural gas resources to industrial and commercial centres across the region’s five states.

The investment agreement for the proposed 400-kilometre pipeline was signed on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, during the South-East Gas Infrastructure Investment and Project Development Ceremony at Hotel Presidential, Enugu.

Represented by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, President Tinubu described the initiative as a strategic investment aimed at strengthening manufacturing, attracting private capital and creating employment opportunities across Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia and Ebonyi states.

According to reports, the project is being advanced through the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), in partnership with relevant energy-sector stakeholders, including GasSync Limited and NNPC Gas Marketing Limited.

Pipeline Targets Regional Industrial Development

The proposed network is expected to connect gas resources in Imo State to industrial and commercial hubs throughout the South-East, helping businesses access more reliable energy for production and expansion.

President Tinubu said the project reflects the need to treat the South-East as an interconnected economic region, where infrastructure can support industries and markets beyond individual state boundaries.

The planned network could strengthen manufacturing in Aba, support industrial clusters in Nnewi and Onitsha, attract new enterprises to Enugu and expand agro-processing and manufacturing opportunities in Ebonyi, while linking Imo’s gas resources to the wider regional economy.

The project is also intended to create conditions for new factories and industrial parks, particularly businesses whose development has been constrained by the cost and reliability of energy supply.

SEDC, Partners Outline Investment Plans

The South-East Development Commission has reportedly committed an initial $3 million towards the project and is seeking to mobilise additional funding from state governments, institutions and private investors.

Project promoters have identified approximately 150 potential customers, with projected gas demand estimated at 254 million standard cubic feet per day.

The proposed pipeline is expected to originate from the Ohaji area of Imo State, with connections through Owerri and branches towards industrial centres including Aba and Onitsha, alongside extensions to Enugu and Ebonyi.

The project’s full impact will depend on financing, construction, regulatory approvals, infrastructure delivery and the ability of industries to access gas at commercially viable rates.

Mbah Welcomes Regional Infrastructure Initiative

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, welcomed the investment agreement, describing the initiative as an opportunity to advance coordinated industrial development across the South-East.

The governor also expressed commitment to regional cooperation, including support for the necessary approvals and processes required to facilitate implementation.

For Enugu State, access to reliable gas infrastructure could support manufacturing, agro-processing, commercial enterprises and other energy-intensive businesses, potentially broadening investment opportunities and creating jobs for young people.

However, the projected benefits will depend on effective implementation, transparent financing, environmental safeguards and clear timelines for delivering the pipeline.

What the Project Could Mean for Ndi Enugu

If successfully delivered, the proposed gas network could help reduce energy constraints faced by businesses, improve the competitiveness of local industries and encourage new investments across the region.

For Ndi Enugu, the key issues to watch will include the project’s construction timeline, the location of distribution connections, gas pricing, employment opportunities for local residents and the extent to which small and medium-sized enterprises can benefit.

The signing of the investment agreement marks an important step in advancing the proposal, but sustained progress will be measured by the commencement of construction, completion of the infrastructure and the delivery of practical economic benefits to communities and businesses.
