Agriculture & Rural Development: Commission Identifies Farmland and Launches Pilot Project to Boost Food Production Across the South East.

Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform — October 19, 2026.

THE South East Development Commission (SEDC) has advanced its agro-mechanisation initiative in Enugu State, with farmland assessments, community consultations and the development of a pilot integrated agricultural project aimed at strengthening food production, creating employment and improving food security across the South East.

The initiative forms part of the commission’s broader regional development agenda, which seeks to modernise agriculture, expand commercial farming and create opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs and young people.

In July 2026, the commission reported that it had identified approximately 4,000 hectares of farmland in Enugu State for its proposed agro-mechanisation programme. The assessments covered about 2,000 hectares in Nkpologwu, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, and another 2,000 hectares in Elugwu Akwu-Achi, Oji River Local Government Area.

Nomeh Unateze Emerges as Pilot Project Location

On September 23, 2026, Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah officially flagged off the South East Agro-Development Programme (SEADP), a 200-hectare pilot integrated model farm at Nomeh Unateze in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The event marked a transition from preliminary planning to implementation of the commission’s agricultural development programme, with participation from government officials, commission leadership and community stakeholders.

The pilot project is expected to demonstrate how coordinated investment in farmland, agricultural equipment and modern farming practices can improve productivity and support a more commercially oriented agricultural sector.

Mechanised Farming to Expand Agricultural Productivity

The SEDC’s agro-development blueprint envisages mechanised farming across the South East’s 15 senatorial districts, with three project locations planned for each of the region’s five states.

According to reports on the programme, the commission is targeting the development of up to 50,000 hectares of land across the South East. Pilot farms are intended to support the cultivation of staple crops such as cassava and maize, alongside selected cash crops, while creating opportunities for agricultural training and innovation.

The initiative is also intended to address challenges associated with food insecurity and unemployment by improving access to modern farming methods and creating opportunities throughout the agricultural value chain.

Community Participation and Sustainable Development

Community engagement has been an important part of the programme’s preparation. Consultations with host communities help address land access, local participation and security considerations before projects move into full implementation.

Successful delivery will also depend on access to farm machinery, quality seeds, irrigation where necessary, storage facilities, processing infrastructure and reliable routes to markets.

Farmers and agricultural cooperatives could benefit from training, partnerships and opportunities to participate in the programme’s supply chains, provided these arrangements are incorporated into the implementation framework.

Enugu’s Role in Regional Food Security

Enugu State’s participation in the initiative places it within a broader effort to strengthen agricultural production and economic cooperation across the South East.

For the programme to achieve lasting results, stakeholders will need to monitor cultivated hectares, crop yields, farmer participation, jobs created and the affordability and availability of food in local markets.

Transparent land arrangements, environmental safeguards and inclusive participation will also be important to ensure that host communities benefit from agricultural investments.

As the SEDC advances its agro-development agenda, the Nomeh Unateze pilot farm offers an opportunity to demonstrate how mechanisation and integrated agricultural planning can contribute to regional food security and rural economic development.

Enugu Media Village (EMV) will continue to monitor the programme’s implementation and report on its progress, challenges and impact on farmers, communities and food production across Enugu State.
