NIGERIA’S First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has inaugurated 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and launched a ₦1 billion economic empowerment programme targeting 5,000 beneficiaries in Edo State.
The two initiatives were unveiled on Thursday, October 15, in Benin City, as part of efforts by the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo to improve public transportation, support small businesses and expand economic opportunities for residents.
According to reports, the empowerment programme will provide ₦200,000 each to 5,000 beneficiaries to strengthen their businesses, improve their livelihoods and promote financial independence.
CNG Buses to Support Public Transportation
Speaking during the event, Senator Tinubu commended the Edo State Government for introducing the initiatives, describing them as important steps towards improving residents’ welfare and supporting economic growth.
She expressed satisfaction with the commissioning of the 50 CNG buses, noting that the project was intended to benefit the people through improved public transportation.
The introduction of CNG-powered buses is expected to provide an alternative to conventional fuel-powered transport, with the potential to improve operational efficiency and support efforts to make public transportation more affordable.
The extent to which commuters benefit will depend on the buses’ deployment, operating arrangements and fares charged by the transport service.
₦1 Billion Programme Targets 5,000 Beneficiaries
The economic empowerment programme is designed to support 5,000 beneficiaries with ₦200,000 each, with women, youths and other vulnerable groups among those expected to benefit.
Senator Tinubu encouraged the beneficiaries to utilise the financial assistance effectively to grow their businesses and improve their economic circumstances.
She expressed hope that the funds would contribute to sustainable livelihoods and help recipients strengthen their economic activities.
The programme represents a state-level intervention aimed at providing financial support to individuals and small-business operators who require capital to sustain or expand their ventures.
Okpebholo Highlights Welfare and Economic Opportunities
Earlier, Governor Monday Okpebholo welcomed the First Lady and described her visit as a demonstration of concern for the welfare and development of Edo residents.
The governor said the two initiatives addressed important needs in the state, particularly access to public transportation and financial support for small businesses.
He noted that the CNG buses were intended to improve the accessibility, efficiency and affordability of public transportation, while the empowerment programme would help beneficiaries strengthen their businesses.
Okpebholo also emphasised the wider social impact of supporting women economically, noting that empowering women could strengthen families and contribute to community development.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding economic opportunities and ensuring that development initiatives reach communities across Edo State.
Implications for Residents and Small Businesses
The success of the initiatives will depend on effective implementation, transparent beneficiary selection and the sustained operation of the new buses.
For commuters, affordable fares and reliable services will be important measures of the transport project’s impact. For empowerment beneficiaries, the availability of business support, responsible use of funds and access to markets could influence the long-term benefits of the financial intervention.
The programmes bring transportation infrastructure and direct financial assistance together as two approaches to addressing economic challenges and improving livelihoods.
