GOVERNOR OF ENUGU State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has reaffirmed his commitment to the continued development of Enugu State, declaring that his administration’s vision for Ndi Enugu goes beyond its present achievements and is focused on building a stronger, more prosperous and economically competitive state for future generations.
The Governor gave this assurance on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while delivering his address at an event themed “Our Commitment to Ndi Enugu: The Journey So Far,” held at the Peter Mbah Law Auditorium, Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.
The gathering provided an opportunity for the Governor to present his administration’s performance scorecard, reflect on the journey since assuming office on May 29, 2023, and outline the development priorities he intends to pursue as Enugu continues its transformation.
Mbah emphasised that the responsibility of leadership is not limited to fulfilling immediate expectations but also involves laying a solid foundation for sustainable development, expanding opportunities and creating an environment in which every resident can aspire to a better future.
Mbah: The Commitment to Ndi Enugu Must Continue
Addressing the future of the state, the Governor reiterated that his administration remains committed to the development vision presented to the people during the 2023 governorship election.
He indicated that if entrusted with another mandate, his focus would be on consolidating existing interventions, addressing outstanding challenges and expanding the development programmes designed to reposition Enugu as a leading destination for investment, enterprise, education and innovation.
The second-term vision, as outlined by the Governor’s development priorities, centres on sustaining improvements in security, completing critical infrastructure projects, strengthening healthcare delivery, expanding educational opportunities and accelerating the state’s economic transformation.
He maintained that the ultimate objective is to build a state where residents can enjoy improved living conditions, young people can access opportunities, businesses can thrive and communities can experience the benefits of development.
Mbah Appreciates Prof. Christian Anieke’s Contributions to Education
A significant moment during the Governor’s address was his expression of appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, for his contributions to education, institutional development and human capital advancement in Enugu State.
Mbah acknowledged the importance of Prof. Anieke’s leadership in strengthening the university’s academic vision, promoting intellectual development and creating an environment that supports the training of future leaders.
The Governor recognised that sustainable development cannot be achieved by government alone, noting through his remarks the importance of institutions and individuals whose contributions strengthen the state’s educational and developmental foundation.
His appreciation of the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the need for stronger partnerships between government, universities, faith-based institutions and other stakeholders in advancing education and building a knowledge-driven economy.
Returning to Account for His Stewardship
Reflecting on the significance of the event, Mbah recalled that he presented his development manifesto at the same university in October 2022, ahead of the 2023 governorship election.
He explained that returning to the institution to present an account of his administration’s performance demonstrated his commitment to accountability and the Citizens Charter established through Executive Order 001, which he signed upon assuming office.
According to the Governor, leadership must go beyond making promises during election campaigns. It must also involve returning to the people to explain what has been achieved, identify areas requiring further attention and communicate the next steps.
The event therefore served as an opportunity to review the administration’s development priorities and reflect on the responsibilities that come with public trust.
Security: Sustaining the Return of Economic Activities
Mbah recalled the security and economic challenges that confronted Enugu State when his administration assumed office in May 2023, particularly the disruption of commercial activities, education and residents’ livelihoods caused by insecurity and sit-at-home restrictions.
He highlighted efforts to restore normal economic activities, especially on Mondays, noting that improved public confidence and mobility are important foundations for business growth and social stability.
Looking ahead, the Governor’s stated priorities include sustaining security improvements and creating an environment where traders, workers, students, investors and other residents can pursue their daily activities with greater confidence.
Infrastructure, Education and Healthcare: Priorities for the Next Phase
The Governor also highlighted investments in road infrastructure, transportation, education and healthcare as essential components of his administration’s development agenda.
On education, he reiterated the importance of the Smart Green Schools initiative, which targets 260 modern schools across the state’s 260 wards.
The programme reflects his administration’s ambition to improve access to quality education, modernise learning environments and prepare Enugu children for the demands of a technology-driven future.
On healthcare, Mbah emphasised the need to strengthen medical facilities, improve healthcare delivery and expand access to quality medical services across the state.
Infrastructure development, aviation, public transportation and road connectivity also featured among the priorities identified as necessary for improving economic activities and connecting communities.
If given another mandate, the challenge before the administration would be to consolidate these interventions, sustain their implementation and ensure that development benefits reach more communities.
The $30 Billion Economic Vision: From Ambition to Sustainable Growth
Mbah further reaffirmed his administration’s ambition to grow Enugu’s economy from approximately $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
He explained that achieving the target would require deliberate planning, strategic investments, private-sector participation and the development of productive sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, technology and infrastructure.
The Governor’s economic vision is centred on positioning Enugu as a destination where people can confidently live, work, invest and visit.
He stressed the importance of collective commitment in achieving the objective, recognising that economic transformation requires the participation of government, businesses, investors, professionals, young people and communities.
A Second-Term Vision Built Around Continuity and Consolidation
The Governor’s address placed particular emphasis on the need to sustain the state’s development direction beyond the administration’s current tenure.
If granted a second term by the electorate, his stated commitment is to build on ongoing programmes, strengthen public institutions, expand economic opportunities and pursue outstanding development priorities.
This would place renewed attention on the delivery of infrastructure, educational reforms, healthcare improvements, security, youth development and the broader ambition of building a $30 billion economy.
For Ndi Enugu, the central questions surrounding the next phase of governance will include the completion of ongoing projects, the sustainability of public investments, the creation of employment opportunities and the measurable improvement of living conditions across the state’s communities.
Prof. Anieke Commends Mbah’s Accountability Initiative
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, commended Governor Mbah for returning to the institution to present an account of his stewardship, nearly four years after presenting his manifesto at the same venue.
Prof. Anieke described the Governor’s return as an important demonstration of accountability and encouraged other political leaders entrusted with public office to embrace the practice of explaining their performance and accounting for their promises.
He also observed that several interventions of the Mbah administration were visible across the state, pointing to the importance of assessing public leadership through projects, policies and their impact on citizens.
The event attracted members of the academic community, students, civil society organisations, business owners, professional bodies and other stakeholders.
THE FUTURE OF ENUGU: COMMITMENT, ACCOUNTABILITY AND CITIZEN PARTICIPATION
As Enugu approaches another electoral cycle, Governor Mbah’s address has brought renewed attention to his administration’s development vision and the priorities he says he intends to pursue if given another opportunity to govern the state.
His message centred on continuity, institutional development, economic transformation and the responsibility to create a future in which Ndi Enugu can enjoy greater opportunities and improved living conditions.
Ultimately, the progress of any administration must be assessed through transparent reporting, measurable outcomes, responsible use of public resources and the experiences of the people across their communities.
