THE Enugu State Government has alleged that some opposition elements are plotting to bring armed thugs and bandits into the state to create panic and undermine public confidence in security ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The allegation was made by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Chidiebere Onyia, during a press conference at the Government House, Enugu, on Sunday, October 11, 2026, where he addressed recent security incidents involving members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to the SSG, the government would not allow political activities to threaten the peace and security of the state. He reaffirmed the administration’s stated commitment to protecting lives and property while upholding citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of association, peaceful assembly and participation in the electoral process.
Government Addresses Recent Security Incidents
The press conference also addressed a confrontation involving NDC members at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, and a separate shooting incident reported at the party’s state secretariat in the GRA area of the state capital.
Professor Onyia attributed the airport confrontation to the party’s alleged attempt to organise a statewide campaign event without obtaining the necessary authorisation from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). He maintained that the incident involved the party and the relevant federal authorities.
On the reported shooting at the NDC secretariat, the SSG said the police were investigating the incident. He disclosed that a 43-year-old man, identified as Ifeanyi Nworie, sustained a gunshot injury and received medical attention before being transferred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, for further examination.
The government denied involvement in both incidents and rejected allegations linking the governor’s Chief Security Officer to the shooting. These assertions represent the government’s account, while the reported police investigation remains important to establishing the facts and determining responsibility.
Need for Independent Verification and Accountability
Although the government has raised concerns about a possible plan to introduce armed individuals into Enugu, the allegation should not be treated as an established fact without independently verifiable evidence.
As of the government’s reported press conference, the alleged plot had not been publicly substantiated with specific details sufficient to establish who was involved, the nature of the purported plan or the evidence supporting the accusation.
Independent investigation by the relevant security agencies would help clarify the allegation, establish whether any credible threat exists and ensure that anyone found to be planning or carrying out political violence is held accountable in accordance with the law.
The unfolding developments also underline the importance of transparent communication by public authorities, responsible reporting by the media and the right of political parties to participate in democratic activities without intimidation or violence.
EMV Position: Peace, Transparency and Democratic Accountability
Enugu State’s political stakeholders, security agencies and government authorities have a shared responsibility to preserve public peace as the 2027 elections approach.
EMV maintains that allegations of electoral violence must be investigated objectively, with evidence made available through appropriate legal and institutional processes. Neither government accusations nor counterclaims by political parties should replace independent findings.
All political actors must respect the rule of law, refrain from inflammatory statements and ensure that political disagreements do not endanger lives or undermine citizens’ democratic freedoms.
The credibility of the electoral process depends not only on peaceful campaigns but also on accountability, public trust, equal protection under the law and the ability of citizens to make political choices without fear.
