THE Enugu State Police Command has ordered a thorough investigation into an alleged shooting at the state secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), following a violent incident that reportedly left one person injured and damaged five parked vehicles.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to identify and apprehend those responsible for the incident, which occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the party’s secretariat in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), Enugu.
According to a police statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, the incident involved unidentified armed men. Police operatives reportedly responded to the distress call, restored normalcy and ensured that the injured victim received medical attention.
The police said the investigation was ongoing, with the command reiterating its commitment to maintaining security and protecting lawful political activities across the state.
Government Rejects Allegations
The Enugu State Government has denied allegations linking it to the incidents involving NDC members at the party’s secretariat and the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
Addressing journalists at the Government House on Sunday, October 11, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the government had made inquiries into the incidents and rejected claims that it was responsible for the violence.
Regarding the airport incident, Onyia said the confrontation arose after the party allegedly attempted to hold a statewide campaign flag-off at the facility without obtaining the necessary approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
He maintained that the airport incident involved the party and relevant federal authorities, while security personnel intervened to restore order.
On the secretariat incident, the SSG confirmed that a violent clash had occurred and said the police were investigating the matter. He also disputed reports that the incident had resulted in a death, stating that the government’s information indicated that the injured party member was receiving medical attention.
However, accounts surrounding the incidents have differed, underscoring the importance of a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the facts.
Call for Peace Ahead of 2027 Elections
The state government condemned political violence and urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and within the law as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The government reiterated its stated commitment to protecting citizens’ rights to freedom of association, peaceful assembly, campaigning and voting, irrespective of political affiliation.
The police also urged political parties and organisers to notify the command of planned rallies, meetings and other political gatherings in advance to enable appropriate security arrangements.
Accountability Remains Central
The ongoing investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting, identify those responsible and determine whether any criminal offences were committed.
For residents and political stakeholders, the key issues remain the safety of political gatherings, protection of citizens and the need for credible investigations that are free from political interference.
As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, stakeholders are expected to prioritise dialogue, restraint and respect for the rule of law. Any person found culpable should be dealt with in accordance with the law, regardless of political affiliation.
