THE Enugu State Police Command has reported the arrest of 182 suspects, the rescue of 31 kidnapped victims and the recovery of 57 firearms since the establishment of its Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in April 2026. The figures were announced on October 14, 2026, during the formal launch of the unit in Enugu.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, presented the unit’s operational scorecard, highlighting its activities against armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, cultism, and drug-related offences.
According to the police, the recovered weapons included 13 AK-47 rifles. The unit also recovered 669 rounds of assorted live ammunition and 44 vehicles, including cars, tricycles and motorcycles. The commissioner added that many of the suspects arrested had been prosecuted.
IGP Launches Violent Crime Response Unit-VCRU
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, formally launched the VCRU at its headquarters in Golf Estate, Enugu. He was represented at the ceremony by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 13, AIG Miller Gajere Dantawaye.
The unit is designed to strengthen intelligence-led policing, improve responses to violent crimes, prevent criminal activities and protect lives and property.
Its specialised operations cover armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism-related offences, cultism and drug trafficking. The unit also has provisions for operational monitoring, professional conduct oversight and media liaison to support coordination and accountability.
Governor Mbah Commended for Security Support
During the launch, the Inspector-General of Police commended Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for supporting security infrastructure and providing assistance for the refurbishment of 12 operational police vehicles.
The support was described as helpful in improving police mobility, patrol coverage and emergency response capacity across the state.
The police leadership also charged personnel of the new unit to maintain professionalism, discipline, accountability and respect for human rights in carrying out their duties.
Civilian Oversight and Public Cooperation
The launch also highlighted the role of the VCRU State Civilian Oversight Board, which includes representatives of civil society, traditional institutions, the legal profession, the media, youth groups and the Police Community Relations Committee.
The board is expected to promote accountability, incorporate community feedback and support public confidence in police operations. Cooperation between residents and law enforcement agencies remains important for reporting suspicious activities, providing credible information and preventing crime.
Sustaining Security Gains Across Enugu State
The reported figures provide an operational snapshot of the VCRU’s activities since April 2026. Sustaining progress will require consistent intelligence gathering, effective investigations, lawful arrests, successful prosecutions and continued engagement with communities.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, report credible security concerns through appropriate official channels and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic or undermine investigations.
As the VCRU begins its formal operations, continued monitoring will be important to determine how effectively the unit reduces violent crime and strengthens public safety across Enugu State.
Enugu Media Village (EMV) will continue to report verified developments concerning security operations, crime prevention and public safety in Enugu State.
