ENUGU State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has empowered 512 youths from the Enugu North Senatorial District with vocational skills, productive equipment and access to information on government-backed enterprise opportunities as part of efforts to strengthen youth economic participation and self-reliance.
The empowerment programme, held at the E24 Auditorium, Onuiyi, Nsukka, brought together young people from the 13 deaneries of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, alongside youths from other Christian denominations and Muslim communities across the zone.
The initiative was designed to move beyond skills acquisition by connecting beneficiaries with practical tools and opportunities that can support income-generating activities, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.
Among the productive assets distributed were sewing machines, generators, professional make-up kits, hair clippers, insecticide spraying machines and shoe-making machines, providing beneficiaries with tools directly relevant to their chosen trades and businesses.
The programme also exposed participants to opportunities in agriculture, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the creative economy and other emerging sectors, reinforcing the administration’s emphasis on developing human capital alongside physical infrastructure.
The intervention reflects the broader youth-development direction of the Mbah administration, which has placed skills development, enterprise creation, technology and access to economic opportunities among its priorities. The Enugu State Government has also highlighted youth empowerment and skills acquisition among the areas covered by its ongoing development programmes.
For young entrepreneurs, the provision of productive equipment can help improve their capacity to deliver services and expand their businesses, while agricultural beneficiaries can utilise the support to strengthen activities across the farming value chain.
The Nsukka empowerment programme therefore represents a grassroots approach to youth development, combining training, productive assets and access to opportunity information in an effort to help young people translate skills into economic activity.
As Enugu continues to pursue a broader economic transformation agenda, initiatives targeted at equipping young people with relevant skills and productive capacity remain an important component of efforts to build a more productive and opportunity-driven population.
Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform, will continue to spotlight initiatives promoting youth empowerment, skills development, entrepreneurship and inclusive economic growth across Enugu State.
