Nigeria and the United States have signed a new investment framework that could open up expanded American participation in Nigeria’s estimated $700 billion mineral-resource sector, with the agreement targeting exploration, local processing, infrastructure development and technical capacity across the country’s mining value chain.
The framework is expected to provide a platform for new investment partnerships, technology transfer, mineral processing and value-chain development, as Nigeria seeks to move beyond the export of raw minerals and generate greater domestic economic value from its vast solid-mineral resources.
The agreement was signed and exchanged at Nigeria’s Mission House in New York by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, and the United States Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Under the framework, Nigeria and the US will strengthen cooperation in areas including geological data and exploration, mineral development and processing, infrastructure and technical capacity building.
The Federal Government said the arrangement is also designed to encourage business-to-business transactions and investment partnerships between Nigerian and American companies, potentially creating opportunities for job creation, skills development and greater participation by local businesses in the mining value chain.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Alake said Nigeria’s objective is to transform its mineral resources into greater economic value through local processing, skills development and increased investment.
The agreement comes as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to diversify the Nigerian economy and attract investment into the solid minerals sector, including minerals considered strategically important to modern industries.
The Nigerian government has estimated the country’s mineral resources at about $700 billion, underscoring the scale of the investment opportunity being targeted through the new partnership.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said the agreement reinforces the partnership between Nigeria and the United States and Washington’s support for Nigeria’s economic development.
The immediate impact of the framework will depend on its implementation, including the identification of commercially viable projects, mobilisation of private-sector capital and development of infrastructure required to support mining and mineral processing.
If successfully implemented, the framework could deepen cooperation between both countries in Nigeria’s mining sector while creating opportunities across exploration, processing, infrastructure, technology and workforce development.
