The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that the three phases of its recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise produced 10,772,421 new registrations nationwide.
The Commission said the figure remains subject to verification through its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) as part of efforts to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the national voters’ register.
The registration exercise was conducted in three phases between August 2025 and August 2026, with the final phase ending on August 17, 2026, followed by the display of the register for claims and objections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, disclosed the latest registration figure during the Commission’s North-West Zonal Interactive Meeting with staff and its readiness assessment for the 2027 general elections in Kaduna.
According to the Commission, the ongoing verification process is important to ensure that only eligible and properly captured voters are included in the final register.
Amupitan also directed INEC officials to address operational and logistical challenges that could affect the electoral process, particularly bottlenecks associated with the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) at the grassroots.
The Commission has subsequently announced that nationwide collection of newly issued PVCs will commence on October 9, 2026.
As part of its preparations for the 2027 elections, INEC said it is also strengthening its voter-verification and result-management systems, while improving logistics, security coordination, deployment of electoral materials and training of ad-hoc personnel.
The Commission’s official voter portal currently allows registered voters to check their voter status and locate their PVC collection centre.
With more than 10.7 million new registrations recorded, the verification of the data and subsequent PVC collection will constitute important stages in the preparation of the voters’ register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
