Global financial markets are facing renewed pressure as uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and continuing tensions in the Middle East keep investors focused on energy supplies, oil prices and inflation.
Oil prices remained elevated on Tuesday, with Brent crude trading above $104 per barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) around $92 per barrel in early trading, although prices later eased as signs emerged of recovering crude exports from the region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern for energy markets because disruptions to shipping through the strategic waterway could affect the movement of crude oil from major Gulf producers. Reuters reported that Middle Eastern crude exports increased to about 12.8 million barrels per day in September, their highest level since February, helped by higher shipments from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The uncertainty has also weighed on global equities. Asian markets broadly declined on Tuesday, while investors monitored oil prices and the possibility of further interest-rate adjustments by the U.S. Federal Reserve as inflation pressures remain a concern.
In the United States, major stock indexes also recorded losses on Monday, with the S&P 500 falling 0.8%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite declining 0.9%. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note reached 5.23%, its highest level since 2007, according to AP.
Diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran are continuing through mediators, with discussions focused partly on conditions surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, no breakthrough agreement had been announced as of Tuesday.
