The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the collection of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will commence nationwide on October 9, 2026, as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, announced the date on Monday during the Commission’s North-West zonal interactive meeting and readiness assessment with its personnel in Kaduna.

The Commission also disclosed that the three phases of the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise produced 10,772,421 new registrations, which remain subject to verification through INEC’s Automated Biometric Identification System.

Amupitan urged INEC officials to eliminate administrative and logistical bottlenecks that could hinder the distribution of PVCs, particularly at the local government level, stressing the importance of ensuring that eligible Nigerians can access their voter cards.

The INEC Chairman said the Commission was strengthening its technological systems for voter verification, result transmission and result management ahead of the 2027 elections. He also cited the introduction of the eEC8A as part of ongoing efforts to improve election-result management.

According to the Commission, it is adopting a “zero-failure” approach to election logistics, covering early deployment of electoral materials, transportation, security coordination and the training of ad-hoc personnel.

Amupitan further cautioned electoral officers against partisan conduct and administrative negligence, urging them to maintain professionalism and neutrality in the discharge of their responsibilities.

INEC has also urged eligible Nigerians to make use of the Commission’s official voter-information platforms to check their PVC and polling-unit information as preparations continue. The Commission’s CVR portal currently allows registered voters to check their PVC status and collection centre.

The October 9 commencement of PVC collection represents another major phase in the preparations for the 2027 general elections, with INEC continuing its nationwide assessment of operational readiness.
