ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians living abroad that it is intensifying efforts to strengthen national security, tackle insecurity and sustain the country’s economic recovery.
The assurance was given during an engagement with members of the Nigerian community in Luanda, Angola, held on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).
The engagement was coordinated by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, while Nigeria’s delegation to the AU summit was led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
FG Pledges Stronger Security
Speaking during the interaction, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd.), acknowledged the security challenges confronting Nigeria, noting that some of the threats were linked to instability in the Sahel region and the resulting spillover across national borders.
Musa assured Nigerians in Angola that the Federal Government was taking comprehensive measures to strengthen the country’s borders, prevent security threats and improve the capacity of the nation’s security architecture.
According to him, the Tinubu administration remains committed to defeating terrorism and other security threats, with ongoing efforts to improve the manpower, equipment and operational capabilities of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
The Defence Minister’s assurance comes as the Federal Government continues to intensify military and inter-agency operations against terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements across the country.
‘Nigeria Is on Path of Full Recovery’
Also speaking at the engagement, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, expressed confidence in the direction of the Nigerian economy.
Tunji-Ojo told the diaspora community that the country was experiencing economic growth and moving towards full recovery.
“Nigeria is growing, the economy is growing and Nigeria is on the path of full recovery.”
His remarks come amid fresh economic data showing that Nigeria’s GDP growth accelerated to 4.43 per cent in the second quarter of 2026, according to government reports released on September 1.
The Federal Government has continued to present economic growth, increased productive activity and improved macroeconomic indicators as evidence that its ongoing reforms are beginning to produce measurable results.
FG Considers Passport Centre in Angola
The engagement also provided an opportunity for Nigerians resident in Angola to present some of the challenges affecting them directly to government officials.
One of the major requests from the Nigerian community was the establishment of a Nigerian passport production centre in Angola.
Members of the community said improved access to passport and consular services would significantly reduce the difficulties Nigerians face when seeking documentation and other essential services.
Responding to the request, Tunji-Ojo said the government would look into the proposal with a view to making passport services more accessible to Nigerians living in Angola.
Diaspora Seeks Better Welfare, Direct Flights
Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian community, the Secretary of the Nigeria Community Association in Angola, Nnaemeka Francis Obi, commended the Federal Government delegation for engaging directly with Nigerians in the country.
However, he highlighted concerns relating to passport and consular services, healthcare and transportation links between Nigeria and Angola.
The community specifically appealed for improved healthcare support and the introduction of direct flights between Nigeria and Angola by a Nigerian airline, which they said would strengthen people-to-people and economic ties between both countries.
Dabiri-Erewa Reaffirms Diaspora’s Importance
The NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended Nigerians in Angola for their contributions to Nigeria’s development and for projecting a positive image of the country in their host nation.
She assured the community that the Federal Government values the contributions, concerns and welfare of Nigerians in the Diaspora, stressing that their voices remain important in shaping policies and interventions affecting citizens abroad.
Dabiri-Erewa also urged Nigerians in Angola to remain united, law-abiding and committed to contributing positively to the development of both Nigeria and their host country.
The engagement underscores the Federal Government’s renewed effort to deepen its relationship with Nigerians abroad while addressing issues affecting their welfare, security and ability to contribute to national development.
The government, through NiDCOM and other relevant agencies, is expected to continue engaging Nigerians across the world and exploring solutions to concerns raised by the Diaspora community.
For Nigerians abroad, the assurances from the Federal Government represent a renewed commitment to creating a safer Nigeria, strengthening the economy and making it easier for citizens in the Diaspora to maintain meaningful connections with their homeland.
