ENUGU — Indigenes, residents and stakeholders across Isi-Uzo, Enugu South, Enugu North, Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Enugu East and other parts of Enugu State have commended the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, and the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) for what they described as the peaceful conduct of the recent Local Government elections in the state.
The election was conducted across the 17 Local Government Areas of Enugu State, with voters participating in the process to elect Local Government Chairmen and Councillors representing the 260 political wards across the state.
According to residents and community stakeholders, the generally peaceful atmosphere recorded during the exercise created an enabling environment for citizens to participate in the grassroots democratic process and exercise their civic responsibilities through the ballot.
The stakeholders noted that peaceful elections at the local government level are important to strengthening democratic participation, accountability and effective representation at the grassroots, where elected officials are expected to address issues directly affecting communities.
They also acknowledged the contributions of ENSIEC, security agencies, political parties, candidates, community leaders and voters toward maintaining order and allowing the electoral exercise to proceed without major disruptions in the areas covered.
The stakeholders further stressed the importance of sustaining peaceful political engagement beyond elections, urging elected representatives to remain responsive to the needs and aspirations of the communities they now represent.
They said effective local government administration requires continued collaboration among elected officials, traditional and community leaders, residents, civil society organisations and other relevant stakeholders to promote development and improve the delivery of services at the grassroots.
The commendations come as attention shifts toward the responsibilities of the newly elected local government and ward representatives, with residents expecting them to translate their electoral mandates into tangible development, inclusive governance and improved community engagement.
The stakeholders therefore called for continued commitment to peaceful democratic participation and respect for electoral institutions, noting that credible and orderly grassroots elections remain important to strengthening democratic governance in Enugu State.
