Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform — October 20, 2026.
THE ENUGU State Government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and safeguarding the democratic rights of residents ahead of the 2027 general elections, following concerns over alleged plans to introduce armed thugs and bandits into the state.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Chidiebere Onyia, raised the concern during a press conference at Government House, Enugu, on October 11, 2026, according to reports published the following day.
The government alleged that some opposition elements were planning to bring armed individuals into Enugu to create panic and undermine public confidence in the state’s security. However, the allegation remains the government’s stated position and should not be treated as an independently established finding without supporting evidence from relevant security agencies.
Government Calls for Sustained Peace and Security
Professor Onyia reaffirmed the administration’s position that peace and security remain essential to protecting residents, supporting economic activities and ensuring that political disagreements do not escalate into violence.
The government also condemned politically motivated violence and called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to exercise restraint, respect the law and pursue their political objectives through peaceful and democratic means.
As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, residents and stakeholders have a shared interest in ensuring that public spaces remain safe and that disagreements are resolved through lawful processes.
Electoral Rights and Freedom of Association
The state government also reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights to associate freely, participate in political activities, support candidates of their choice and vote in credible elections.
These rights are central to democratic governance and should be respected regardless of political affiliation.
Political parties and their supporters should be able to organise lawful meetings, engage voters and communicate their positions without intimidation, threats or unlawful interference.
At the same time, political gatherings must comply with applicable laws, public safety requirements and the legitimate rules governing the use of public facilities.
Police Investigation and the Need for Verified Information
The government’s remarks followed two reported incidents involving the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC): a confrontation at Akanu Ibiam International Airport and a separate violent incident at the party’s state secretariat in Enugu.
In its public account, the government denied involvement in both incidents and stated that the shooting incident at the party secretariat was under police investigation. Reports also stated that one man sustained a gunshot injury.
The circumstances surrounding these incidents, including responsibility for any violence, should be established through credible investigations and evidence rather than political allegations or speculation.
The allegation of a plan to import armed thugs and bandits likewise requires appropriate investigation and, where evidence supports it, lawful action by the relevant security agencies.
A Collective Responsibility for a Peaceful Election
Maintaining peace ahead of an election requires cooperation among government institutions, security agencies, political parties, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, community leaders and residents.
Security agencies should investigate credible threats impartially, protect all lawful political activities and ensure that anyone suspected of committing an offence is treated in accordance with due process.
Political leaders should also promote issue-based campaigns, discourage inflammatory statements and encourage their supporters to reject violence and intimidation.
For residents, responsible civic participation includes verifying information before sharing it, reporting credible threats to the appropriate authorities and refusing to participate in activities capable of endangering lives or disrupting public order.
EMV POSITION: PEACE, ACCOUNTABILITY AND DEMOCRATIC RESPONSIBILITY
Enugu State’s security concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections deserve serious attention. Nevertheless, allegations of planned violence must be distinguished from verified facts, and any investigation should be conducted transparently and without political bias.
The protection of lives, property and democratic freedoms should remain a shared priority. A peaceful electoral environment will depend not only on government assurances but also on effective security measures, credible investigations, respect for the law and the willingness of all political actors to uphold democratic principles.
