THE Enugu State Police Command has arrested five male suspects and recovered three firearms, six rounds of live ammunition and other exhibits in separate intelligence-led operations across the state.

The development was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, October 8, by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, as part of the Command’s sustained operations against violent crime.

According to the Police, operatives attached to the Inyi Division responded to a distress call concerning an alleged armed robbery at Umuaor, Umukabia Isiama Awlaw Community in Oji River Local Government Area, at about 5:10 a.m. on October 7.

The operation led to the arrest of 26-year-old Arinze Osita Onwuaso, while other suspected members of the group reportedly fled. Police said a locally made cut-to-size single-barrel gun, two live cartridges, a pry bar, hammer, scissors and chisel were recovered.

In another operation, operatives of the Command’s Anti-Cultism Section of the Violent Crime Response Unit arrested two suspected cultists, identified as Jonas Adejo, 24, also known as J-Money, and Okoro Innocent, 25, also known as Virus, at Umudioka Community in Nsukka.

The Police said three live rounds of 9mm ammunition were recovered from the suspects, who allegedly confessed during interrogation to membership of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.

Similarly, operatives of the Aninri Division, working with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, raided an alleged criminal hideout at Amagu Mpu Community in Aninri LGA on September 25.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 25-year-old Anichebe Ogbonna, from whom police said one locally made pistol was recovered.

In a separate operation at Ameke-Ngwo in Udi Local Government Area, operatives of the 9th Mile Division arrested 38-year-old Chukwujekwu Chukwuemeka, who police said was allegedly involved in armed robberies in the area. A cut-to-size pump-action gun and one live cartridge were reportedly recovered.

The Police Command said investigations are ongoing, adding that the arrested suspects would be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives for their prompt response and urged residents to remain vigilant, law-abiding and supportive of security agencies by providing credible information.

The latest arrests form part of the Command’s broader intelligence-led security operations across Enugu State, which have also recently targeted the vandalism and theft of public infrastructure.
