THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) unit to monitor digital threats, detect manipulated media and combat election-related misinformation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed the initiative on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during the Artificial Intelligence and Democracy Forum 2026 in Abuja, organised in collaboration with Yiaga Africa and other partners.

The commission said the initiative would help identify AI-generated videos, cloned audio recordings, fabricated election results and other misleading content capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process.

Amupitan stressed that technology must support, rather than determine, the outcome of elections, insisting that the decision on who governs Nigeria must remain with the electorate.

“Algorithms will not, and must never, decide the 2027 vote,” the INEC chairman declared.

AI to Strengthen Election Security and Results Verification

According to the commission, the new AI unit will operate within its Information and Communication Technology Directorate, using digital monitoring tools, deepfake detection software and data analytics to identify emerging threats to electoral integrity.

INEC is also developing an AI governance framework designed to ensure transparency, accountability and human oversight in the deployment of the technology.

The commission explained that AI could support election logistics, identify inconsistencies in uploaded result sheets, improve voter registration processes and strengthen the detection of duplicate biometric records.

However, Amupitan emphasised that critical electoral decisions, including result collation and the declaration of winners, would remain subject to statutory procedures and human accountability.

Warning Against Fake Election Information

The INEC chairman raised concerns over the increasing use of generative AI to impersonate public officials, circulate fabricated electoral guidelines and spread false information about candidates, election dates and results.

He warned that misleading content could spread rapidly across social media platforms, potentially confusing voters, heightening political tensions and weakening public confidence in democratic institutions.

The commission called on political parties, media organisations, technology companies, civil society groups and security agencies to work together to protect the information environment ahead of the elections.

INEC also urged technology platforms to strengthen their responses to deceptive AI-generated political content and support efforts to identify and label manipulated media.

Implications for Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

With Nigeria preparing for another major electoral exercise, the growing influence of artificial intelligence presents both opportunities and challenges for election administration.

While AI can improve operational efficiency and help detect irregularities, its misuse can facilitate impersonation, disinformation and the circulation of fabricated election results.

For voters, the commission’s message is clear: election-related information should be verified through credible sources before it is shared or acted upon.

Media organisations also have a critical responsibility to verify viral videos, audio recordings, official statements and election figures before publication.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen electoral credibility and ensure that technology serves democratic participation rather than undermines it.
