The Custos Care Foundation (CCF), a pet project of the wife of the Enugu State Governor, Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, has condemned in strong terms the alleged sexual abuse and exploitation of a minor in Onitsha, Anambra State, calling for a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident.

The foundation expressed deep concern over reports alleging that a minor was sexually abused and exploited by her biological mother in the commercial city of Onitsha.

In a statement made available to journalists by its Managing Director, Mrs. Blessing Egodi Igwe, CCF described the reported incident as deeply disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that any form of sexual abuse or exploitation of a child constitutes a serious violation of the child’s dignity, safety, rights and overall well-being.

The foundation said the alleged incident, particularly the reported circumstances involving a child within a domestic environment, raises serious concerns about child safety and the effectiveness of existing safeguarding mechanisms in homes and communities.

According to CCF, the development underscores the urgent need for stronger child-protection systems, greater parental responsibility and increased vigilance among families, communities and relevant institutions.

The foundation also welcomed reports that the Anambra State Police Command had apprehended the alleged perpetrator and her husband in connection with the case.

It, however, called on the relevant authorities to ensure that the matter is subjected to a comprehensive and impartial investigation, with due process strictly followed and justice served.

CCF stressed that the best interests, privacy, dignity and psychological well-being of the child must remain paramount throughout the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.

The foundation further urged government agencies, families and communities to treat the incident as a wake-up call on the urgent need to strengthen child safeguarding and protection mechanisms across society.

“There is an urgent need for concerted action to protect children from aggression, neglect, exploitation, sexual abuse, trafficking and other forms of violence,” the foundation said.

It emphasised that child protection should not be regarded as the sole responsibility of government institutions, noting that parents, caregivers, neighbours, traditional rulers, women leaders, schools, religious institutions, community leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders all have important roles to play.

The foundation also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected or confirmed cases of child abuse, exploitation, neglect or violence to the appropriate authorities, including the Police, relevant child-protection agencies and trusted civil society organisations.

“Where there are signs of abuse, exploitation, neglect or violence, silence can place a child at greater risk,” CCF warned.

The foundation reiterated its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable children and promoting a society where every child can grow in safety, dignity and dignity-free from abuse and exploitation.
