ENUGU STATE  Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has called for urgent national action to address the challenges confronting Nigeria’s education sector, emphasising the need for increased investment, improved teacher development and sustainable reforms that will prepare learners for the future.

The call formed part of the governor’s education reform agenda during the unveiling of the Enugu State Education Policy on October 7, 2026, where he highlighted the importance of strengthening the education system to meet the demands of a rapidly changing society and economy.

The governor’s position underscores the need to treat education as a critical national development priority, given its role in human capital development, poverty reduction, technological advancement and economic growth.

Stronger Funding for Quality Education

A major focus of the proposed reforms is the need for adequate and sustainable funding for education. Effective financing is essential for improving school infrastructure, providing modern learning resources, expanding access to quality education and ensuring that schools offer a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Increased investment in education can also help address disparities between communities, particularly where learners face challenges associated with inadequate facilities, limited instructional materials and unequal access to educational opportunities.

Teacher Development and Professional Support

The governor’s call also draws attention to the importance of equipping teachers with the skills, knowledge and resources required to deliver quality education.

Continuous professional development, improved teaching methods, access to modern instructional tools and appropriate support for educators are essential to improving learning outcomes. Teachers remain central to the success of any education policy, making their development a key component of sustainable reform.

Long-Term Reforms for Future Generations

Beyond immediate interventions, the Enugu State Education Policy points to the importance of long-term planning, effective implementation and consistent monitoring of educational programmes.

Sustainable reforms require clear objectives, measurable outcomes and cooperation among government institutions, school administrators, teachers, parents, communities and other stakeholders. Such collaboration can help ensure that education policies translate into tangible improvements in classrooms and learners’ experiences.

The focus on long-term reform is particularly relevant as governments respond to changing workforce demands, digital technology and the growing need for practical skills that prepare young people for employment, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Education as a Foundation for Development

For Enugu State, education remains an important pillar of human capital development and the wider ambition to build a productive, knowledge-driven economy. The success of the policy will depend not only on its objectives but also on adequate funding, effective implementation, accountability and measurable improvements in teaching and learning.

At the national level, the governor’s call for an education emergency raises broader questions about how Nigeria can mobilise resources, strengthen public institutions and ensure that every child has access to quality education, regardless of background or location.

As implementation progresses, sustained attention to teachers, school infrastructure, curriculum relevance and learning outcomes will be essential to translating policy commitments into meaningful progress.
