The Enugu State Police Command has arrested five suspects in connection with three separate incidents of alleged vandalism and theft

involving public infrastructure across Enugu metropolis.

The arrests, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, followed separate operations conducted between September 15 and September 27, 2026. The items allegedly targeted included a solar streetlight, road traffic signs and materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.

Two suspects, identified as Wisdom Nuhu and Moses Jonathan, were arrested on September 27 at a scrap dump in New Artisan Market, Enugu, following information that they were allegedly negotiating the sale of a suspected stolen solar streetlight.

Police said the streetlight was allegedly vandalised earlier that day at Graceland Estate, Independence Layout, Enugu, and was recovered during the operation.

In another incident, police operatives from the Abakaliki Road Division arrested 35-year-old Chukwudi Nwigbo along Abakaliki Road, GRA, Enugu, after the Command-and-Control Centre reportedly detected him and another individual allegedly removing road traffic signs.

Several vandalised road signs were recovered, while the second suspect reportedly escaped from the scene.

The Police Command also reported the arrest of Zubairu Hamanpedimso, 31, and Mohamed Adamu, 21, over the alleged vandalism and theft of materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.

According to the police, a bag containing iron materials, bolts and nuts allegedly removed from the corporation’s facilities was recovered from the suspects.

The Command said all five suspects had been arraigned and remanded in correctional custody pending further proceedings, while efforts were continuing to apprehend other persons allegedly connected to the incidents.

Protecting Public Assets Is a Shared Responsibility

The development has again highlighted the importance of protecting public infrastructure as Enugu continues to invest heavily in roads, street lighting, water infrastructure, security systems and other facilities designed to improve the quality of life of residents.

Vandalism of public assets does not only create additional costs for government; it can also disrupt essential services, undermine public safety and slow down development in communities.

Residents are therefore encouraged to remain vigilant and provide credible information to security agencies whenever they observe suspicious activities involving public infrastructure.

The Enugu State Police Command has urged members of the public to continue supporting security operations through timely information and cooperation.
