Commission Opens Seven-Day Exercise to Distribute New Voter Cards and Allow Nigerians to Verify Registration Details Ahead of 2027 Elections.
Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform — October 9, 2026
THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced nationwide distribution and collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) on Friday, October 9, as preparations intensify for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The exercise coincides with the commission’s display of the preliminary register of voters for claims and objections, giving registered Nigerians an opportunity to collect available cards and verify their personal registration details.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed that Nigeria’s National Register of Voters had surpassed 103 million following the completion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and biometric verification.
According to reports by Premium Times and other Nigerian media organisations, the commission recorded 10,772,421 new registrations across the three phases, subject to the completion of the prescribed verification processes.
The nationwide PVC collection exercise is scheduled to run alongside the display of the preliminary register from October 9 to October 15, 2026.
Registered Voters Urged to Collect Cards and Check Details
INEC has urged eligible voters to take advantage of the exercise to collect their available PVCs and confirm that their registration information is accurate.
During the seven-day exercise, registered voters are encouraged to check details such as their names, photographs, dates of birth and polling-unit information.
The commission has explained that the display of the preliminary register allows voters to identify errors and submit claims or objections within the stipulated period.
In Plateau and Sokoto states, electoral officials announced that the exercise would take place at designated Registration Area centres, with further collection arrangements available through INEC local government offices.
Collection arrangements may differ by state and category of registration. Voters are therefore advised to confirm the location and availability of their cards with their respective INEC state offices before travelling.
Which PVCs Are Available?
The current exercise covers PVCs arising from the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, conducted between August and December 2025.
INEC officials in some states have clarified that cards relating to later registration phases, lost or damaged cards, transfers and certain registration updates are not yet available for collection under this exercise.
The commission is expected to provide further announcements concerning the availability of those cards.
Registered voters should consequently confirm that their cards are ready rather than assume that every new registration or replacement request can be fulfilled during the current collection period.
INEC Strengthens Preparations for 2027 Elections
The PVC distribution exercise forms part of INEC’s broader preparations for the next general elections, which include technological improvements, voter-register verification and efforts to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
The commission has also announced the acquisition of 57,000 additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices to support election administration.
INEC has emphasised the importance of professional conduct, neutrality and reliable information as preparations progress.
The growing voter register also highlights the need for effective voter education, accessible collection centres and adequate arrangements for eligible Nigerians in rural communities.
Why PVC Collection Matters
The Permanent Voter Card remains an important document for voter identification and participation in Nigeria’s electoral process.
For citizens who registered during the relevant phase, collecting their cards early can help prevent last-minute difficulties ahead of the elections.
Voters are also encouraged to verify their details carefully and report any discrepancies through the appropriate INEC channels within the prescribed period.
The commission’s current exercise provides an opportunity to improve the accuracy of the voter register while ensuring that eligible citizens are better prepared for the 2027 polls.
As political activities gradually intensify, INEC’s ability to distribute available PVCs efficiently, resolve registration issues and communicate clearly with voters will remain essential to building confidence in the electoral process.
Enugu Media Village (EMV) urges eligible voters to confirm their collection centres, collect available PVCs promptly and verify their registration details before the close of the exercise on October 15.
