THE FEDERAL Government has unveiled a new curriculum and a five-year strategic plan for colleges of education across Nigeria, with a renewed emphasis on quality teacher training, practical learning and improved academic standards.
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, announced the development at a programme in Abuja, where she cautioned colleges of education against introducing or expanding degree programmes without the necessary qualified lecturers, adequate facilities and effective quality assurance systems.
The minister noted that allowing colleges of education to award degrees alongside the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) presents an opportunity to strengthen teacher education. However, she maintained that the quality of graduates produced must remain the priority rather than the number of institutions offering degree programmes.
Ahmad also urged the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) to ensure that institutions fully understand and effectively implement the revised curriculum.
She called on college administrators to align their budgets, recruitment plans and infrastructure development with the objectives of the reform, while encouraging stronger coordination among the Federal Ministry of Education, NCCE, National Universities Commission and relevant institutional authorities.
The Executive Secretary of the NCCE, Dr Angela Ajala, explained that the curriculum is designed to prepare prospective teachers for the changing demands of modern education.
According to her, the programme will incorporate digital skills, inclusive education, entrepreneurship and contemporary teaching methods, while providing student teachers with more practical classroom experience.
Ajala, however, stressed that successful implementation would depend on adequate funding, modern learning facilities and the availability of qualified teaching personnel.
The new curriculum and the NCCE Medium-Term Strategic Plan for 2026–2031 are expected to guide colleges of education in improving their training programmes and producing teachers equipped to meet the evolving needs of Nigerian schools.
Effective implementation will be crucial to translating the policy into better teaching standards, stronger learning outcomes and improved educational opportunities nationwide.
