FIVE PEOPLE, including four students of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, and a driver attached to the Niger State Government House, have reportedly died in a road accident involving a vehicle in the convoy of Governor Mohammed Bago.

The fatal collision occurred on Monday at Gidan Mangoro in Minna, the Niger State capital, involving a Toyota Hilux conveying the Government House Director-General, Dauda Chikuba, and a vehicle carrying the students.

According to reports, the four students and the Government House driver died at the scene, while Chikuba was taken to a hospital for medical attention.

The accident reportedly happened as the governor’s convoy was returning to Minna following a condolence visit to the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Yahaya Abubakar, over the death of Sagi Nupe, Aisha.

Reports indicate that the vehicle conveying the students was travelling towards Bida when the collision occurred.

An eyewitness reportedly described the incident as a head-on collision and alleged that the convoy was travelling at high speed before the crash. However, the cause of the accident had not been independently established at the time of reporting.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and said the police had commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Further details, including the identities of the deceased and the full findings of the investigation, were not immediately available.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the importance of road safety, responsible driving and thorough investigations into fatal road accidents, particularly those involving official convoys.
