Regional Development: Enugu Governor Seeks Strategic Infrastructure to Boost South East Connectivity and Industrialisation.

Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform — October 19, 2026.

GOVERNOR of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has urged the South East Development Commission (SEDC) to prioritise a regional gas pipeline, an inter-state railway network and strategic initiatives to accelerate industrialisation across the South East.

The governor made the call on October 12, 2026, while receiving the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, led by its Chairman, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, during a visit to assess the commission’s projects and programmes.

According to the Enugu State Government, Mbah said the proposed infrastructure projects could strengthen economic activities, improve connectivity among the five South East states and promote regional integration. He also called on the National Assembly to ensure adequate funding for the commission to deliver on its development mandate.

Regional Gas Pipeline to Support Industrialisation

Mbah identified a high-pressure gas pipeline linking major cities across the South East as a strategic intervention capable of providing industries with more reliable access to gas.

He argued that improved gas infrastructure could help reduce energy constraints for businesses, encourage industrial investment and support the establishment and expansion of manufacturing enterprises across the region.

The governor further stressed that the South East should benefit from the wider region’s gas resources through infrastructure that connects energy supplies to industrial and commercial centres.

If effectively planned and implemented, the proposed pipeline could create opportunities for energy-intensive industries, strengthen local production and support employment generation.

Inter-State Railway Network for Regional Connectivity

The governor also proposed an inter-state railway network linking major cities across the five South East states to facilitate trade, improve passenger and freight transportation, and reduce pressure on existing road infrastructure.

He called for cooperation among the five state governments to develop a common design for the proposed railway system, with the SEDC serving as a platform for coordination and regional collaboration.

A coordinated railway network could improve the movement of agricultural produce, raw materials and manufactured goods while making it easier for businesses to reach markets across the region.

However, the realisation of the proposal would require detailed feasibility studies, sustainable financing, technical planning and cooperation among the relevant governments and infrastructure agencies.

SEDC as a Platform for Industrial and Economic Growth

Beyond gas and rail infrastructure, Mbah highlighted the commission’s potential role in supporting agriculture, technology-driven enterprises and young entrepreneurs whose businesses have attained the minimum viable product stage.

He called for funding opportunities that would enable eligible businesses to expand operations, create jobs and contribute to the region’s economic development.

The governor also urged members of the National Assembly to support adequate funding for the commission, describing the proposed interventions as potential catalysts for an industrial transformation across the South East.

Earlier, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu acknowledged the Enugu State Government’s support for the commission’s take-off, including the provision of temporary office accommodation and a site for its permanent headquarters in Enugu.

A Shared Development Agenda for the South East

The proposals place regional collaboration at the centre of efforts to address infrastructure gaps and unlock the economic potential of the South East.

For the initiatives to translate into tangible benefits, stakeholders will need to establish clear implementation timelines, financing arrangements, project priorities and accountability mechanisms. Coordination among the five state governments, the Federal Government, private investors and the SEDC will also be essential.

The proposed gas pipeline and railway network remain strategic infrastructure priorities requiring further planning and implementation. Their eventual impact will depend on effective execution and their ability to support businesses, improve transportation and generate opportunities for residents across the region.
