Mbah Administration Urges Political Parties to Embrace Peaceful Campaigns as Police Investigate NDC Secretariat Shooting.
Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform— October 16, 2026.
THE Enugu State Government has raised concerns over an alleged plan by unnamed opposition elements to bring armed thugs and bandits into the state to create fear and undermine public confidence in security ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The allegation was made by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Chidiebere Onyia, during a press conference at the Government House, Enugu, on Sunday, October 11, following two incidents involving the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat in Enugu.
According to reports published on October 11 and 12, the government alleged that some opposition elements intended to portray Enugu as insecure for political advantage. However, the allegation of a planned influx of armed groups was not accompanied by publicly detailed evidence in the reports reviewed and should be treated as an allegation, not an independently established fact.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Security:
Professor Onyia said the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah remained committed to protecting lives and property and preserving the peace the state government says it has maintained over the past three years.
He maintained that residents must be able to participate in political activities, support candidates of their choice and exercise their voting rights without intimidation or violence.
The SSG also urged political parties and their supporters to conduct their activities responsibly, avoid inflammatory statements and embrace issue-based campaigns as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
Government Addresses Airport Confrontation:
The government also addressed the confrontation involving NDC members at Akanu Ibiam International Airport on Saturday, October 10.
According to Onyia, the incident arose after the party allegedly mobilised supporters for a proposed statewide campaign flag-off at the airport without obtaining the necessary approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
He said security agencies had advised the party to secure the relevant authorisation before proceeding with the event.
The government maintained that the airport incident involved the party and federal authorities, denying that the state administration was responsible for the confrontation.
The account represents the state government’s position on the incident.
Police Investigate Shooting at NDC Secretariat:
On the reported shooting at the NDC state secretariat in the GRA area of Enugu, the SSG said the incident was under police investigation.
He disclosed that a 43-year-old man, identified in media reports as Ifeanyi Nworie, sustained a gunshot wound and received medical attention at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Park Lane, before being transferred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, for further examination.
The government denied reports of fatalities and rejected allegations that Governor Mbah’s Chief Security Officer, Ifeanyi Osondu, was involved in the incident.
These denials and explanations are the government’s account; the police investigation remains important to establishing the circumstances, identifying those responsible and determining whether any offences were committed.
Call for Restraint Ahead of 2027:
The government reiterated its opposition to political violence and said democratic rights, including freedom of association, peaceful assembly and the right to vote, must be respected.
The unfolding developments underscore the importance of transparent investigations, responsible political communication and impartial enforcement of the law.
As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, security agencies, political parties and community leaders have an important role to play in preventing violence, protecting residents and ensuring that political disagreements do not threaten public safety.
For the people of Enugu State, the priority remains a peaceful political environment in which all parties can organise lawfully and voters can make their choices freely, without fear or intimidation.
