OPERATIVES of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested former Imo State Governor and Senator, Rochas Okorocha, at a hotel in Abuja over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation linked to a disputed All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary election.

Okorocha was reportedly arrested on Monday night, October 12, at the REIZ Continental Hotel in central Abuja, following an ongoing police investigation into documents allegedly presented as results of the APC primary for the Imo West Senatorial District.

According to reports confirmed by a police spokesperson to Channels Television, the former governor was subsequently released on bail after approximately one hour of interrogation. He was also reportedly asked to return to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday for further questioning as investigations continue.

The development has attracted public attention because of Okorocha’s political profile as a former governor and senator, as well as the continuing dispute surrounding the APC’s senatorial primary in Imo State.

WHY POLICE ARRESTED OKOROCHA

Reports indicate that the arrest followed earlier invitations by the police requesting Okorocha’s appearance at the Force Headquarters in Abuja in connection with the investigation.

He was reportedly first invited on September 2, 2026, before the appointment was rescheduled to September 8 at the request of his lawyers. Reports indicate that he did not attend on the rescheduled date.

The police subsequently moved to enforce a bench warrant reportedly issued by a Senior Magistrate Court in Abuja on September 9, 2026, in connection with allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and the presentation of false documents.

The warrant reportedly also named former Senator Ifeanyi Araraume and two other individuals, Timothy Ama Chuks and Amen Okorocha.

The allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial determination. An arrest or investigation does not, in itself, establish criminal guilt.

DISPUTE OVER APC IMO WEST SENATORIAL PRIMARY

The case is linked to a disagreement over the outcome of the APC senatorial primary conducted on May 18, 2026, for the Imo West Senatorial District, also known as the Orlu Zone.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reportedly raised concerns about a document circulating as the result of the primary, which purportedly presented Okorocha as the winner.

According to reports, INEC maintained that the official results submitted to the commission by the APC identified Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, as the winner of the primary and the party’s candidate for the senatorial district.

The electoral commission reportedly petitioned the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), requesting an investigation into the disputed document and its authenticity.

The disagreement has since developed into a legal and political controversy involving questions about the validity of the documents and the official outcome of the party’s selection process.

OKOROCHA HAD PREVIOUSLY CHALLENGED ARREST REPORTS

Before the reported arrest, Okorocha had reportedly rejected claims that a court had issued a warrant for his arrest, challenging those circulating the information to provide evidence of the purported court order.

The latest development, however, marks a new stage in the matter, with reports indicating that police operatives took him into custody for questioning before his subsequent release on bail.

As of Tuesday, October 13, the reported police position was that Okorocha had been asked to return for further interrogation while investigations into the allegations continued.

Further clarification from the police and the former governor’s representatives may provide additional information about the next steps in the case.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The investigation is expected to focus on the disputed documents associated with the APC Imo West senatorial primary and the circumstances surrounding their preparation and circulation.

The outcome could have implications for the ongoing political dispute over representation of the senatorial district, although any determination of criminal responsibility rests with the appropriate judicial process.

For now, the matter remains under investigation, and the allegations against the individuals named have not been established as proven criminal offences by a court.
