ENUGU State has entered a new phase of grassroots administration following the inauguration of newly elected chairmen and vice chairmen across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, while swearing in the council chairmen at Government House, Enugu, charged them to immediately commence work, stressing that there would be “no honeymoon” given the development challenges confronting communities across the state.
The governor described the local government system as the tier of government closest to the people and a critical partner in the state’s development agenda. He urged the new council leadership to align their programmes with priorities including education, healthcare, sanitation, agriculture and poverty reduction.
Mbah also tasked the chairmen with ensuring accessibility and accountability to residents, while responsibly managing public resources entrusted to them. He specifically called for stronger attention to rural poverty and improved educational outcomes at the local level.
The renewed focus on grassroots governance comes as the state government has also constituted Development Centres across the 17 LGAs, aimed at deepening community participation, broadening representation and creating more effective channels for residents to contribute to government programmes and policies.
With the new council administrations and Development Centres now taking shape, attention is expected to shift towards translating state-level development priorities into tangible improvements in communities across Enugu.
