ENUGU  State Government is strengthening its long-term economic growth strategy by integrating infrastructure, security, transportation, tourism, technology and investment into a coordinated development framework aimed at expanding economic opportunities and positioning the state as a major destination for business and investment.

Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has consistently maintained that the various projects being executed across the state are not isolated interventions, but interconnected components of a broader economic transformation agenda.

Speaking recently after the Nigerian Guild of Editors toured major projects across the state, Governor Mbah said the investments in security, transportation, infrastructure, tourism and other sectors were mutually reinforcing and designed to support the administration’s objective of growing the state’s economy and creating an environment where people can live, work, invest and build sustainable futures.

Infrastructure as Foundation for Economic Growth

The administration’s infrastructure programme continues to focus on expanding road connectivity, improving mobility and opening up economic corridors across the state.

Recent projects include the ongoing dualisation of the Enugu–Abakaliki Expressway, the Abakpa Nike–Opi–Nsukka corridor and several urban and rural roads. The 21.65-kilometre Enugu–Abakaliki Expressway, for instance, is being dualised to the Ebonyi State boundary and is expected to strengthen regional connectivity.

The state government has also approved additional strategic infrastructure projects, including roads providing access to major tourism destinations, with the stated objective of improving accessibility and stimulating economic activities around those locations.

Transportation and Regional Connectivity

Transportation remains a major component of the economic strategy.

The administration has invested in modern transport terminals, public transportation and the development of Enugu Air as part of efforts to improve connectivity within and beyond the state.

The recent maiden international flight operated by Enugu Air from Enugu to Douala, Cameroon, was described by the state government as an important step towards positioning Enugu as a regional aviation and commercial hub. The government said the direct connection could facilitate trade, investment, tourism and the movement of people between Nigeria and Cameroon.

The development is also being linked to the administration’s broader objective of making Enugu a preferred destination for investment, business, tourism and living.

Tourism as an Economic Sector

Tourism is increasingly being positioned as an economic sector capable of attracting visitors, private capital and employment opportunities.

The Enugu State Executive Council recently approved the development of the Atakwu–Akegbe-Ugwu Tourism Park and the Enugu Cable Car Project, alongside road infrastructure connecting key tourism destinations.

The proposed tourism park is planned to include recreational and hospitality facilities, while the cable car project is designed to connect Okpatu Hill with the Awhum Waterfall tourism corridor. According to the state government, the projects are intended to attract visitors, stimulate private investment and create economic opportunities.

Security as an Investment Enabler

The government is also linking security directly to economic development, arguing that businesses and investors require a secure environment in which to operate.

During the recent tour of government projects, the Nigerian Guild of Editors visited the state’s Command and Control Centre and highlighted the role of the security architecture in supporting the state’s development efforts.

The administration’s approach places security alongside infrastructure and economic development, with technology-based surveillance and coordinated security operations forming part of the broader development framework.

Technology and the New Enugu City

Technology is another component of the state’s long-term economic strategy.

The government has commenced plans to deploy integrated smart-city technologies in the New Enugu City, including CCTV surveillance, fibre-optic infrastructure, smart traffic-control systems and other digital solutions.

The planned systems are intended to improve security, mobility, connectivity and the management of urban services while supporting the development of a modern economic and residential centre.

Building an Interconnected Economy

The administration’s economic strategy therefore seeks to create an ecosystem in which infrastructure supports transportation, transportation facilitates commerce, security protects investments, tourism attracts visitors and businesses, while technology improves the efficiency of urban and economic activities.

The state government’s 2026 budget strategy similarly identifies economic transformation as an interconnected process involving infrastructure, security, agriculture, tourism, technology and human capital rather than isolated projects.

As Enugu continues to implement its long-term development framework, the emphasis is increasingly being placed on creating the infrastructure, institutions and economic conditions required to support sustainable growth and private-sector participation.

The ultimate objective, according to the administration, is to build an economy capable of generating jobs, attracting investment, expanding opportunities and improving the quality of life of residents while reducing dependence on external revenue sources.
