Vice President Concludes High-Level Diplomatic Engagements at 81st UN General Assembly as Nigeria Strengthens Global Partnerships.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leading the country’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States.
Shettima’s participation formed part of Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement at the annual gathering, which brings together heads of government, senior officials and representatives of countries across the world to deliberate on issues of global importance, international cooperation and development.
The Vice President departed Abuja on September 20 with a presidential mandate to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the high-level UNGA activities. His return to the country follows a series of diplomatic and policy engagements undertaken during the visit.
During his stay in New York, Shettima participated in high-level meetings and engagements focused on Nigeria’s national interests and the country’s role in the international community. He also held discussions with international leaders and officials on issues relating to development, global cooperation and Nigeria’s engagement with multilateral institutions.
One of the reported engagements was a meeting with Rebeca Grynspan, a candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. During the interaction, Shettima reiterated Nigeria’s position on the principles of equity and justice in international affairs.
The Vice President’s participation also provided an avenue for Nigeria to engage with international partners at a time when the Federal Government is seeking to strengthen diplomatic, economic and development partnerships.
Nigeria’s delegation to the UNGA included senior government officials and governors, reflecting the Federal Government’s effort to use international platforms to advance national priorities and deepen engagement with global institutions and potential partners.
The annual General Assembly remains one of the most significant platforms for countries to articulate their positions on international affairs, exchange views on global challenges and pursue areas of cooperation.
For Nigeria, participation at the UNGA also offers opportunities to highlight the country’s economic potential, development priorities and investment opportunities while engaging international stakeholders on issues affecting the country and the wider African continent.
Shettima’s return comes as Nigeria moves closer to its 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026. Preparations for the anniversary are expected to form part of the country’s national activities in the coming days, with attention focused on Nigeria’s progress, challenges and development aspirations.
The Vice President is expected to resume his official responsibilities following the conclusion of the international engagements.
The Federal Government has continued to emphasise the importance of international partnerships in supporting Nigeria’s economic transformation, strengthening institutions, attracting investment and advancing national development objectives.
