Enugu Governor Advocates Responsible Use of Technology to Improve Teaching and Learning.

ENUGU State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has said artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies should be deployed to strengthen the effectiveness of teachers rather than threaten their roles in the classroom.
Governor Mbah made the remarks while addressing delegates at the 59th National Conference of Delegates of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) held in Enugu, where stakeholders examined the implications of technology and AI for the future of the teaching profession.
The conference focused on the theme: “Deployment of Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Education Will Erode the Place of Teachers in the Classroom: Myth or Reality?”
Mbah said the rapid development of AI should not be viewed primarily as a threat to employment but as an opportunity to improve productivity, innovation and learning outcomes across the education sector.
According to him, AI can support teachers by assisting with lesson preparation, personalising learning, identifying students’ learning gaps and expanding access to knowledge.
He, however, stressed that technology cannot replace the human qualities that remain central to effective teaching, including mentorship, inspiration, understanding students’ individual circumstances, character formation and encouraging ambition.
The Governor therefore called for an education system where teachers and technology work together, stressing that the future should be built around teachers using technology, rather than technology replacing teachers.
Mbah also emphasised the importance of safeguards around the deployment of AI in schools. He identified ethical standards, data protection, responsible regulation and continuous professional development for teachers as essential to ensuring that AI adoption benefits both educators and learners.
He said teachers should be positioned among the principal beneficiaries and drivers of the technological transformation taking place in education.
Enugu’s Investment in Education
Speaking on his administration’s education policies, Governor Mbah said education has remained a major component of the state’s development strategy, with investments covering infrastructure, technology, curriculum innovation, teacher development and welfare.
He disclosed that the state government had recruited 6,850 teachers and other education personnel, with the objective of addressing manpower gaps and improving the student-teacher ratio.
Mbah also said education had received about 33 per cent of the state’s budget across three budget cycles under his administration.
He further highlighted the development of technology-driven Smart Green Schools across the state’s 260 wards, describing the initiative as part of efforts to prepare young people for an increasingly digital and technology-driven world.
The Governor maintained that technological advancement must go hand in hand with investment in the teaching workforce, noting that a modern education system requires teachers who are adequately equipped, motivated and prepared to work with emerging technologies.
He also commended the Nigeria Union of Teachers for convening the national conference in Enugu and recognised stakeholders contributing to the professional development and dignity of teachers.
The conference brought together education stakeholders to examine how technology and AI can be responsibly integrated into education while preserving the essential human role of teachers.
