Nigerian champions Rangers International were held to a 1-1 draw by Benin Republic champions AS Sobemap in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie on Sunday.

Rangers took the lead through Chidozie Iwundu in the first half, putting the Enugu-based side in control and raising hopes of a strong home advantage.

However, Sobemap responded shortly after the restart to level the score and frustrate the reigning NPFL champions. Rangers created opportunities to regain the lead but were unable to find the decisive second goal.

The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the return fixture, with Rangers now facing a crucial assignment away from home.

Rangers head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu admitted that his team must improve their finishing but expressed confidence that the Flying Antelopes can secure victory in the second leg.

“Our only choice is to win, and we’ll go all out for that game,” Ilechukwu said.

The return leg is scheduled for September 11, with Rangers needing a strong result to keep their CAF Champions League campaign alive.

The Enugu side, which entered the competition as Nigeria’s reigning league champions, will now have to show greater attacking efficiency and composure if they are to advance to the next stage.
