ENUGU — The 300-bed Enugu International Hospital has emerged as one of the flagship projects of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s ambitious healthcare transformation agenda, with the facility positioned to redefine access to advanced and specialised medical services in Enugu and the wider South-East.

The hospital, located on Rangers Avenue, Independence Layout, Enugu, is being developed as a comprehensive quaternary healthcare facility equipped with advanced diagnostic, surgical and treatment technologies. Recent inspections of the facility showed that major medical equipment and specialist units have been installed ahead of its planned inauguration.

Governor Mbah has described the project as a deliberate component of his administration’s vision to establish Enugu as a major medical tourism destination, stressing that the facility was conceived to reduce the number of Nigerians travelling abroad in search of specialised medical treatment.

According to the governor, the project was part of the administration’s broader strategy to retain healthcare expenditure within Nigeria while attracting patients and medical professionals from other parts of the country and beyond.

The facility is expected to provide specialised services through several centres of excellence, including cancer care, heart and vascular medicine, neurosciences, renal and transplant services, as well as advanced imaging, surgery, intensive care and other medical services.

Among the advanced infrastructure highlighted at the facility are MRI and CT scan systems, mammography equipment, specialised surgical theatres, cancer-treatment equipment, renal and dialysis facilities and other modern diagnostic technologies. The hospital is also expected to deploy digital and electronic medical practices, including telemedicine, to connect patients with medical expertise beyond Nigeria.

The Commissioner for Health, Professor George Ugwu, recently disclosed that the hospital was expected to commence operations before December, describing it as a major addition to specialist healthcare capacity in the South-East.

He also highlighted the facility’s cardiac catheterisation laboratory and dialysis suite, noting that the hospital would serve as an apex referral centre for patients requiring advanced treatment.

Beyond healthcare delivery, the project is expected to contribute to employment generation, professional development and the reversal of medical brain drain. The state government has said that Nigerian medical professionals in the diaspora have expressed interest in returning to contribute their expertise to the facility.

The hospital also forms part of a wider healthcare investment programme under the Mbah administration, which includes the development of primary healthcare facilities and upgrades of secondary healthcare institutions across the state. The governor has repeatedly maintained that quality healthcare is essential to creating an environment capable of attracting investment, retaining talent and supporting economic growth.

With the facility approaching its operational phase, expectations are rising that the Enugu International Hospital could become a major referral destination for patients across the South-East and strengthen Enugu’s emerging profile as a centre for advanced healthcare and medical tourism.

For Ndi Enugu, the project represents more than another physical infrastructure development; it is being presented as a long-term investment in health, human capital, employment and the economic transformation of the state.

Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform, will continue to monitor the development of the Enugu International Hospital and report relevant updates as the facility moves towards full operation.
