DOUALA, CAMEROON — On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, something bigger than an aircraft landed at Douala International Airport.
Enugu Air touched down in Douala on its maiden international flight, marking a significant milestone in Enugu State’s drive to strengthen regional connectivity and positioning the State as an emerging economic, tourism and investment hub in Africa.
The historic flight established a direct air corridor between South-East Nigeria and Central Africa, creating new opportunities for trade, tourism, cultural exchange, sports, investment and stronger people-to-people relationships between Enugu and Cameroon.
Representing the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, at the landmark event, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the new route was a deliberate outcome of the Governor’s vision to make Enugu more accessible, connected and investment-ready.
According to Onyia, the international route aligns with the administration’s broader ambition of attracting three million visitors to Enugu annually, while expanding the State’s economic connections beyond Nigeria.
He said the direct Enugu-Douala connection would deepen commercial and cultural relations between the two regions and provide businesses, tourists, students, families and other travellers with a more convenient and reliable means of movement.
The commitment by Enugu Air to sustain the route, he added, would further strengthen the emerging bridge between South-East Nigeria and Central Africa.
The significance of the development was also acknowledged by key Cameroonian officials.
Governor of Cameroon’s Littoral Region, Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, described the arrival of Enugu Air as the beginning of a new partnership between the region and Enugu State, signalling the potential for stronger economic and social cooperation.
Similarly, the Director of Douala International Airport, Jacob Bahayang Mbargaso, described the occasion as one of “triple significance”—diplomatic, economic and commercial.
For Nigeria, the new route represents another avenue for strengthening regional business and human connections.
The Nigerian High Commissioner to Cameroon, Sani Umar Jibrilla, noted that the direct flight would particularly benefit traders and entrepreneurs from the South-East, while facilitating increased business activities and people-to-people exchanges between Nigeria and Cameroon.
Beyond the official ceremonies and diplomatic significance, the arrival of Enugu Air carried a deeply personal meaning for many Nigerians living in Douala.
Lady Love Arum, an Enugu indigene who has lived in Douala for more than 16 years, described the direct flight as a welcome development that would ease the difficult journeys previously undertaken by road or through Lagos.
For people like Arum, the new route is not simply about aviation. It is about bringing families closer, reducing travel difficulties and creating a more direct connection between home and the communities where they live and do business.
The Enugu-Douala route therefore represents more than the arrival of an aircraft at an international airport.
It is a visible expression of a broader regional integration agenda—connecting Enugu to new markets, businesses, investment opportunities, tourism destinations and communities across Central Africa.
