Enugu State has emerged winner of the 2026 Nigeria eGovernment Excellence Award, receiving national recognition for its digital transformation programme and the deployment of technology in public service delivery.
The award was presented on September 10, 2026, during the eighth Nigeria eGovernment Summit and Excellence Awards held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos. Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the summit, was represented by the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Lawrence Ezeh.
According to reports on the award, the organisers recognised Enugu for its efforts to use technology as a catalyst for economic development, more efficient public services and greater citizen empowerment.
The recognition comes against the backdrop of the administration’s broader digitalisation agenda, which seeks to move government processes away from traditional manual systems and towards technology-enabled administration.
Digital Governance Across Key Sectors
Enugu’s digital transformation programme has extended across several areas of governance, including public administration, finance and revenue management, land administration, healthcare, security, education and infrastructure planning.
The state government has also promoted Enugu One, its official digital gateway, designed to provide citizens with access to government services, utilities and community information. The platform currently advertises more than 50 services and has recorded over 10,000 active users.
Speaking at the summit, Dr. Ezeh said digital transformation had become an important component of the administration’s reform agenda, with technology being deployed not merely as an administrative tool but to improve the interaction between government, citizens and businesses.
He also participated in discussions covering broadband connectivity, digital infrastructure, right-of-way reforms, cybersecurity, election infrastructure and public-private collaboration.
Technology as a Driver of Economic Growth
The award also fits into the administration’s stated ambition of using technology and innovation to create a more competitive business environment and support its long-term economic target.
The Mbah administration has identified digital infrastructure, innovation, skills development and technology-enabled governance as components of its wider economic strategy, alongside investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and security.
In September, the state government also unveiled a compendium documenting more than 10,000 reported milestones across various sectors, including 1,521 kilometres of roads, more than 7,000 classrooms and 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres. These figures are government-reported and form part of the administration’s own assessment of its development record.
Recognition Comes With Greater Expectations
While the award provides national recognition for Enugu’s digital governance efforts, its practical significance will ultimately depend on how effectively digital systems improve everyday interaction between residents, businesses and government institutions.
For Enugu residents, the key expectation is that digitalisation will translate into faster services, easier access to government information, improved transparency, reduced bureaucracy and more efficient public administration.
The state government has indicated that the award should serve as an incentive to deepen its digital reforms rather than an endpoint, with plans to expand technology use across public institutions.
The 2026 Nigeria eGovernment Summit was held under the theme “Mainstreaming Technologies in Nigeria Election Management”, with discussions also covering artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data protection, digital inclusion and technology-enabled public administration.
