Over 500 Editors, Stakeholders to Deliberate on Democracy, Media and AI-Driven Disinformation.

ENUGU — Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, is expected to declare open the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Enugu on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
The two-day conference, the flagship annual gathering of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, will hold at The Dome, International Conference Centre, Opara Square Road, Enugu, beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday and continuing on Friday, September 25.
The conference is themed “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” while its sub-theme is “When Lies Look Real: Detecting and Debunking AI Disinformation Before, During and After Election.”
According to the NGE, more than 500 editors from across Nigeria, alongside government officials, academics, civil society representatives and other stakeholders, are expected to participate in the conference.
Vice President Shettima is expected to address participants on issues relating to democracy, elections, press freedom and national development, while Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, is also scheduled to address the gathering.
The Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, will chair the conference, while former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.
Other speakers include Professor Auwal Yadudu of Bayero University, Kano, who will examine public trust, electoral justice and democratic stability, and Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association, who will discuss election petitions in the digital age, including independence, evidence, BVAS and the courts.
The conference will also feature discussions on responsible journalism, election security, reporting terrorism, journalists’ wellbeing and the growing challenge of artificial intelligence-driven disinformation.
Professor Farooq A. Kperogi of Kennesaw State University, Georgia, United States, is expected to lead discussions on detecting and debunking AI-generated disinformation before, during and after elections.
The second day will feature an executive session where editors are expected to engage governors, political party leaders and heads of government agencies and parastatals on issues of national importance.
The Nigerian Guild of Editors said the conference is designed to provide a platform for media leaders and other stakeholders to examine practical approaches to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national development, rebuilding public trust and advancing responsible journalism.
The 2026 ANEC is supported by the Enugu State Government, UNESCO, Craneburg, NNPC, Zenith Bank, NCC and other partners.
