ENUGU State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane, is positioning itself for postgraduate medical accreditation by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) and the West African College of Surgeons (WACS), following sustained investments by the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah in healthcare infrastructure, specialised equipment and human capital development.

The Chief Medical Director of ESUTH Parklane, Prof. Bethrand Ngwu, disclosed this on Friday, September 25, 2026, while briefing journalists in Enugu, noting that the ongoing transformation of the hospital has significantly strengthened its capacity to deliver advanced tertiary healthcare services and support specialist medical training.

According to him, the Enugu State Government has invested over ₦500 million in surgical and specialised medical equipment for the hospital. The equipment, he said, includes ventilators, patient monitors, image intensifiers, X-ray machines and modern operating-theatre equipment.

Ngwu explained that the investments have enhanced the hospital’s capacity to handle complex medical and surgical procedures while creating a stronger environment for postgraduate training and professional development.

He further disclosed that ESUTH has secured 350 postgraduate training slots following its recent accreditation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), describing the development as an important step towards strengthening the hospital’s role as a centre for specialist medical education in the South-East.

The CMD also highlighted the state government’s support for medical residency training, alongside efforts to expand and strengthen the hospital’s specialist workforce.

He said ESUTH currently has 126 full-time consultants, 50 part-time consultants, 540 nurses and 130 house officers, in addition to other categories of medical, technical and support personnel.

Ngwu attributed the progress to the sustained commitment of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration to rebuilding the state’s healthcare system through investments in infrastructure, modern medical equipment, manpower development and improved service delivery.

He said the combination of improved facilities, specialised equipment and a growing pool of medical professionals was positioning ESUTH Parklane for higher standards of tertiary healthcare and postgraduate medical education.

The development forms part of the broader healthcare transformation agenda of the Mbah administration, with emphasis on strengthening healthcare institutions, improving access to quality medical services and developing the specialist manpower required to serve Enugu State and the wider South-East region.
