Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State, has reportedly expelled a final-year nursing student and suspended 14 other 500-level nursing students following the circulation of a viral social media video showing students dancing within the institution’s teaching hospital.

The video, which attracted widespread attention online, carried the caption, “No sick o, na Gen Z full hospital now,” a phrase that has since triggered public debate about professional conduct, social media trends and the responsibilities of future healthcare practitioners. Premium Times and other Nigerian media outlets reported the disciplinary action on October 4, 2026.

According to media reports, the clip showed nursing students dancing in different areas of the hospital environment, including a waiting area, a corridor, a staircase and a bus. The recording was associated with the “Gen Z nurses” social media trend, in which participants create entertainment content around healthcare settings.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Chima Achu, confirmed the disciplinary action to Premium Times, while reports identified the expelled student only as Mercy. The other 14 students were reportedly suspended.

The development has generated mixed reactions, with some Nigerians emphasising the need for discipline and professionalism among nursing students, while others have appealed to the university to reconsider the severity of the sanctions.

NANS Appeals for Reconsideration

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the university management to reconsider the expulsion and grant the affected student another opportunity to complete her education.

NANS acknowledged that the students’ conduct was inappropriate and did not reflect the standards expected of people preparing for careers in healthcare. However, the association argued that expulsion could have serious, long-term consequences for a student who had already invested years in her education and professional training.

The association urged the university to consider a stern warning or other disciplinary measures that would correct the behaviour without permanently disrupting the student’s academic future.

The Nigerian Universities Nursing Students’ Association (NUNSA) has also reportedly engaged relevant stakeholders in seeking a fair resolution for the affected students.

Professionalism and Social Media Responsibility

The controversy has renewed discussions about the boundaries between personal expression, online entertainment and professional responsibility, particularly in hospitals and other sensitive environments.

Hospitals are places where patients seek treatment, comfort and reassurance. Consequently, students undertaking clinical training are expected to understand the importance of patient dignity, confidentiality, appropriate behaviour and respect for institutional rules.

Although social media can provide opportunities for creativity, networking and public engagement, content creators working or training in healthcare settings must exercise particular caution. Recording videos in clinical environments may raise concerns about patient privacy, consent, the dignity of people receiving treatment and the public image of healthcare institutions.

Even when no patient is visibly harmed, the setting and message of a video can influence public perceptions of the seriousness with which healthcare professionals approach their responsibilities.

For nursing students, therefore, professional conduct extends beyond examinations and practical assessments. It also includes understanding when entertainment content is inappropriate, respecting hospital policies and recognising the trust that patients place in healthcare workers.

Calls for Proportionate Discipline

While educational institutions have a responsibility to enforce their rules and maintain professional standards, the incident has also raised questions about proportionality, due process and the role of corrective discipline.

Supporters of the university’s reported decision argue that students preparing for clinical responsibilities must understand the consequences of misconduct, particularly when it occurs within a teaching hospital.

Those calling for leniency maintain that disciplinary measures should, where appropriate, leave room for rehabilitation and learning, especially when students are close to completing their academic programmes.

A balanced resolution would require the university to consider its regulations, the circumstances surrounding the recording, the students’ individual levels of involvement, any applicable disciplinary procedures and the possibility of corrective measures.

As of the latest reports reviewed for this publication, public reporting had not established whether the university would reverse or modify the sanctions. The institution’s final position on any appeal should be confirmed through an official statement.

A Lesson for Students and Aspiring Professionals

The incident serves as a reminder to students across Nigerian universities that social media activity can have consequences beyond online reactions and viral engagement.

Students in nursing, medicine, pharmacy, law, education and other professional disciplines must recognise that their conduct in training environments can affect their academic standing and future careers.

At the same time, disciplinary decisions involving young people should be approached with fairness, consistency and due consideration of the facts.

The central lesson is not that students should abandon creativity or social media engagement, but that they must understand the limits imposed by professional environments, institutional regulations and the rights of others.

For Madonna University and the affected students, the outcome of this controversy will remain a subject of public interest as calls for accountability, professionalism and compassion continue.
