ENUGU — The South-East Development Commission (SEDC), in collaboration with the Enugu State Government, has commenced a 200-hectare pilot integrated model farm at Nomeh Unateze in Nkanu East Local Government Area, marking a significant step towards advancing agricultural development and food production in the South-East.

The initiative forms part of a broader regional agricultural development programme designed to strengthen food security, promote modern farming practices and create new opportunities across the agricultural value chain.

The establishment of the integrated model farm is expected to support the development of a more productive and sustainable agricultural sector by encouraging improved farming methods, greater utilisation of agricultural resources and increased participation in agribusiness.

Strengthening Agriculture and Regional Economic Development

The collaboration between SEDC and the Enugu State Government reflects efforts to position agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and development in the region.

Integrated agricultural projects can support multiple areas of the value chain, including crop production, livestock development, processing, storage and market access. By linking these activities, such initiatives can help reduce post-harvest losses, improve productivity and create opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders.

The pilot project at Nomeh Unateze is also expected to provide a platform for demonstrating modern agricultural practices that may be adapted and expanded across other communities in the South-East.

Opportunities for Farmers, Youths and Agribusiness

Beyond food production, the agro-development programme has the potential to contribute to employment generation, skills development and investment opportunities in the agricultural sector.

Greater investment in mechanisation, agricultural training, processing facilities and market linkages could help improve the participation of young people in farming while supporting the growth of small and medium-sized agribusinesses.

The success of the pilot model farm will depend on effective implementation, access to modern equipment, technical support, sustainable financing and strong coordination among relevant stakeholders.

A Step Towards Sustainable Food Production

The commencement of the 200-hectare integrated model farm reinforces the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing food security and promoting agricultural development in the South-East.

As the programme progresses, attention will be focused on its implementation, the benefits to local farmers and communities, and its contribution to the region’s wider economic development objectives.
