NIGERIA’S First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has commended state governors for their road construction and infrastructure development efforts, describing the level of activity she has observed as notable in her years of public service.
The First Lady made the remarks on Saturday, October 10, 2026, during a North-Central grassroots rally organised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an interview with News Central TV at the event, Mrs Tinubu drew on her experience in the Senate to comment on the pace of infrastructure development across the country.
“I have been in the Senate for 8 years. This is the first time I will see governors fixing roads, building a lot of infrastructure,” she said, according to the report published by Newsvista.
Her remarks have brought renewed attention to road construction and public infrastructure as important issues in discussions about governance, service delivery and economic development in Nigeria.
INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT TAKES CENTRE STAGE
Road construction remains an important responsibility of state governments, with projects varying across the states according to available resources, development priorities and implementation capacity.
Well-maintained roads can improve connectivity between communities, reduce travel difficulties, support the movement of agricultural produce and goods, and strengthen commercial activities.
Infrastructure development can also create employment opportunities during construction and improve access to markets, schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services.
The First Lady’s comments therefore place renewed emphasis on the role of state governments in delivering projects that directly affect the daily lives of residents.
However, the scale and impact of such developments differ across states, making project completion, quality, maintenance and public access important considerations in assessing infrastructure delivery.
TINUBU SEEKS CONTINUITY FOR GOVERNMENT PROGRAMMES
The rally in Lafia was organised to mobilise political support for President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima ahead of the 2027 general election.
During the event, Mrs Tinubu also highlighted programmes associated with the administration, including food support initiatives for vulnerable groups and educational opportunities available through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
She urged supporters to communicate the administration’s policies and programmes to Nigerians, presenting continuity as important to sustaining its stated development objectives.
The remarks form part of the broader political engagements taking place as the ruling APC prepares for the next general election.
ROAD PROJECTS AND PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY
While road construction and other infrastructure projects are visible indicators of government activity, their long-term value depends on proper execution, durability, maintenance and the benefits they deliver to residents.
Citizens and stakeholders continue to look to governments at all levels for improvements in transportation, public services, employment opportunities and the general cost of living.
The discussion surrounding the First Lady’s comments underscores the importance of infrastructure delivery in public assessment of government performance, alongside other economic and social priorities.
As political activities intensify ahead of 2027, infrastructure development is expected to remain part of the national conversation on governance and public accountability.
