ENUGU State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has vowed that anyone found responsible for the reported attacks on supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State will face prosecution, irrespective of political affiliation or connections.

The governor made the declaration on Monday, October 12, in a video message addressing reports of shootings and violence surrounding the party’s activities on Saturday, October 10, including incidents at the NDC state secretariat and the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.

According to reports by Premium Times, Mbah called on the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and identify those responsible.

He also said he would seek a formal briefing on the progress of the investigation, stressing that the evidence gathered must determine what happened and that anyone found culpable must be held accountable through the appropriate legal process.

Governor Reaffirms Citizens’ Right to Political Participation:

Mbah expressed concern for those injured, residents who experienced fear, and families affected by the violence. He reiterated that every citizen, regardless of political affiliation, should be able to exercise their lawful political rights without intimidation or fear of attack.

The governor further pledged to work with relevant security agencies to safeguard lives and property and ensure that residents can participate in lawful political activities in a peaceful environment.

He emphasised that political differences are a normal part of democracy and should not become a reason for violence or threats against citizens.

Police Begin Investigation into Reported Shootings:

The Enugu State Police Command has ordered an investigation into the reported shootings at the NDC secretariat. Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said the Commissioner of Police, Bitrus Giwa, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Police reports indicated that a man sustained a gunshot injury during the incident at the secretariat, while the windscreens of five vehicles were reportedly damaged by gunfire.

The incidents have generated differing accounts from the state government and the NDC over the circumstances surrounding the airport gathering and the violence that followed. The government has denied responsibility for the attacks, while the party has disputed the government’s account and called for a transparent investigation.

These competing claims underscore the importance of an impartial investigation that establishes the facts and determines individual responsibility based on credible evidence.

Accountability and Peace Ahead of 2027 Elections:

The reported attacks have raised concerns about the safety of political gatherings as parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.

Mbah maintained that the protection of citizens, respect for democratic rights and adherence to the rule of law must remain priorities, regardless of party affiliation.

The outcome of the police investigation will be important in establishing the circumstances of the incidents and determining whether criminal charges are warranted against any individuals.
