ENUGU State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has urged the South East Development Commission (SEDC) to prioritise strategic infrastructure projects, including a regional high-pressure gas pipeline and an inter-state railway network, to accelerate industrialisation and strengthen economic integration across the South-East.

The governor made the call on Monday, October 12, 2026, when he received the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, led by its Chairman, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, at the Government House, Enugu.

The delegation, which included the management of the commission led by its Managing Director, Mr. Mark Okoye, was in the state as part of an oversight visit to assess the commission’s projects, programmes and operational progress.

According to a report by the Enugu State Government, Mbah described the SEDC as a strategic platform for coordinating regional development and advancing projects capable of transforming the South-East economy.

Gas Pipeline to Support Manufacturing and Industrial Growth:

Mbah identified a high-pressure gas pipeline connecting major cities across the five South-East states as a critical investment that could provide industries with more reliable energy supplies and encourage large-scale manufacturing.

He argued that the region should benefit from gas resources produced within the wider southern part of Nigeria, noting that pipeline infrastructure already serves other parts of the country.

The governor expressed confidence that the SEDC could provide the coordination needed to advance a project of such regional significance, working with the relevant state governments and other stakeholders.

Reliable energy remains an important consideration for manufacturers, particularly businesses seeking to reduce operating costs, expand production and create employment opportunities.

If developed and implemented successfully, the proposed pipeline could support industrial clusters, processing plants and other energy-intensive businesses across the region.

Mbah Proposes Inter-State Railway Network:

The governor also called for a coordinated railway network linking major commercial centres across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.

According to Mbah, the proposed rail system would facilitate the movement of people and goods, improve trade and reduce pressure on the region’s road infrastructure.

He urged the five state governments to work together on a common railway development plan, with the SEDC serving as a coordinating platform for regional planning and collaboration.

A connected railway system could improve the movement of agricultural produce, manufactured goods and raw materials while helping businesses reach markets beyond their immediate locations.

However, delivering such a network would require detailed feasibility studies, substantial financing, technical planning and cooperation among the participating states and relevant federal agencies.

SEDC Urged to Support Youth Entrepreneurship:

Beyond major infrastructure, Mbah called on the commission to create funding opportunities for young entrepreneurs whose businesses have attained the minimum viable product stage.

The proposed support would help promising businesses scale their operations, strengthen their market presence and contribute to employment generation and economic growth.

The governor also highlighted the commission’s agricultural development interventions, including the 200-hectare integrated Agro Development Programme at Nomeh Unateze in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

He assured the commission of the state government’s readiness to provide an enabling environment for regional development projects and initiatives.

Governor Seeks Adequate Funding for Commission:

Mbah appealed to members of the Senate Committee to support efforts to secure adequate funding for the SEDC through the National Assembly, stressing that the commission requires sufficient resources to fulfil its development mandate.

The governor’s proposals place emphasis on infrastructure, energy access, transportation, agriculture, technology and enterprise development as complementary drivers of regional economic growth.

Earlier, Senator Kalu acknowledged the progress made in establishing the commission’s operational presence in Enugu. He disclosed that concerns over the location of its headquarters had been resolved following the Enugu State Government’s provision of temporary office accommodation and a site for its permanent headquarters.

Kalu also urged the commission to ensure that its programmes and projects produce tangible benefits for communities across the South-East, stressing the importance of taking development initiatives beyond administrative offices.

The Senate committee is expected to undertake a follow-up assessment in December to review progress, according to reports on the oversight visit.

A Regional Development Agenda:

The proposed gas pipeline and railway network represent major infrastructure ambitions for the South-East. Their potential impact will depend on effective planning, sustainable financing, intergovernmental cooperation and transparent implementation.

For residents and businesses across the region, the central expectation is that regional development initiatives will translate into improved transportation, more reliable industrial energy, expanded investment and sustainable job creation.
