ENUGU State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has announced plans to commence the payment of a new allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from October 2026.
Governor Mbah made the announcement on Friday at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Awgu Local Government Area during the swearing-in ceremony of 2,101 corps members deployed to Enugu State under the 2026 Batch C Stream One service year.
The newly sworn-in corps members comprise 983 males and 1,118 females, according to the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Oluwakemi Awolola. She commended the Enugu State Government for its continued support for the scheme, particularly in the areas of welfare, security and improvements at the orientation camp.
While announcing the new allowance, Governor Mbah did not disclose the amount that each corps member would receive. The governor, however, reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare and security of young Nigerians undertaking national service in Enugu.
Mbah also urged the corps members to establish cordial relationships with residents of their host communities and familiarise themselves with the local culture, traditions and language.
He encouraged them to approach the service year as an opportunity to contribute to national development and deepen their understanding of Nigeria, rather than viewing it merely as a compulsory assignment.
The governor further stressed the importance of creating a country where young people can find meaningful opportunities, develop their talents and contribute productively to national growth.
The NYSC State Coordinator said the orientation programme was designed to promote patriotism, discipline, self-reliance, leadership and national integration, while equipping corps members with knowledge and skills for meaningful contributions to society.
The Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, also urged the corps members to avoid discrimination and respect the culture and traditions of their host communities.
The swearing-in ceremony featured the administration of the oath of allegiance by Justice Anthony Onovo, representing the Enugu State Chief Judge, Justice Raymond Ozoemena.
With the commencement of the new allowance arrangement, the Enugu State Government is further expanding its welfare support for corps members serving across the state. The exact amount and payment details of the new allowance are yet to be publicly disclosed.
