Transport Unions Back Enugu Terminal Policy, Blame Disruption on Communication Gap.

ENUGU — Commercial drivers and tricycle operators in Enugu State have clarified that the recent traffic disruption around Ogbete Main Market was primarily linked to disagreements over enforcement and the allocation of loading spaces at designated transport terminals.
The clarification follows reports that Wednesday’s disruption was a protest against taxation and rising fuel prices. While some reports attributed the incident to those grievances, transport union representatives who met with officials of the Enugu East Zone Terminals said the immediate issue was inadequate communication over the relocation of roadside operators into designated terminals.
The operators reaffirmed their support for the Enugu State Government’s efforts to decongest major roads and move commercial vehicles from roadside loading points into designated terminals.
A representative of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Obi Okonkwo, said the unions had no objection to the terminal policy but wanted affected operators to be properly informed and shown their assigned loading spaces before enforcement.
Similarly, Comrade Chinonso Michael attributed the misunderstanding to a communication gap between enforcement officials and transport operators.
Chairman of the Tricycle Operators of Nigeria in Enugu State, Comrade Kingsley Edeh, also said the immediate concern was the proper allocation of suitable loading spaces, rather than opposition to taxation.
The Managing Director of Enugu East Zone Terminals, Dr. John Egbo, subsequently led representatives of the transport unions to their designated loading areas and assured them of continued engagement.
The Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Obi Ozor, said the terminals were established to address longstanding traffic challenges around Ogbete Main Market, Old Park and other major commercial areas, while improving security and creating a more organised transportation system.
He urged transport operators and other stakeholders to sustain dialogue with the government whenever operational challenges arise.
The latest development comes as the state government intensifies efforts to enforce the use of designated transport terminals as part of its broader traffic-management and urban transportation reforms.
